My Gaming Life - Jason Williams

The NBA legend tests the heat in Mumbai during his recent visit to India for the NBA games

NBA’s official global watch and timekeeper Tissot recently hosted a meet-and-greet with NBA legends as NBA made its debut in India. That’s how we got time for a quick chat with this super chilled-out ex-Miami Heat player and NBA Champion (2006), Jason Williams. Here’s a quick preview...

NBA changed my life… It wasn’t a specific game per say…

Technology has evolved… Social media has taken the game to the next level. The cameras have improved quite a lot I’d say!

I can write a book full of locker room memories… The greatest one would be 2006 winning the NBA Championship (while playing for Miami Heat).

If I weren’t playing basketball, I’d probably be selling shoes.

On the subject of shoes, I may have close to a 150 pairs…

Basketball is popular all over the world, and here in India too. The players that we have are such good sportsmen and kids look up to them. I’d say, social media plays a big part as well. It takes the popularity of the sport up by another notch.

The game’s in a great place right now; the Lakers are going to win the championship this year and I’m pretty excited about watching the games. (James) LeBron has a lot to prove this year. There’s rankings and everything… I think he’s going to have a great year.

Russell Westbrook, LeBron and Kevin Durant are the three players on top of my list…

Injuries (like the on AJ Thompson just had) are just a matter of bad luck. These boys work so hard, they work out everyday of their whole lives. Things like that are going to happen. If it’s your time to get hurt, it’s your time to get hurt.

I neither tried watching a Bollywood film, nor Indian cuisine. I’m very picky about what I eat…I tried the McDonalds here in India and the chicken nuggets taste the same as anywhere else…

Sacramento Kings and Indiana Pacers have a good season ahead of them. They’re a young roster, they have a lot of surprises in store for the NBA fans.

The player to watch out for in the upcoming games season is… James LeBron.

Anytime the NBA shows up in your city or country, it’ll have a great impact on the kids, especially the ones that get to go to the games. For kids to see an NBA player right in front of them… for me as a kid, I can only imagine what that would have done for me. Given the popularity of these guys, I can only imagine what it can do to them.

I played a little cricket while here in india, and I must say I’m pretty good at it. I don’t know what the age limit is for cricket players, but I might just come back here with a contract (to be on the Indian cricket team)...

Try and get some good, quality coaches… those who know their fundamentals, and just get kids here started early…

I don’t have anything planned in advance ‘coz my life is day-to-day. I go wherever the wind blows. The time I’ve spent here in Mumbai has been great.

My favourite car right now is... Ford Raptor.

The first car I owned ever... was my dad’s two door Chevy Cavalier with shiny silver wheels.

I learnt to drive in... a Volkswagen.

I like Range Rovers and that’s the first car I bought after joining the NBA.

Ferrari or Lamborghini?... Ferrari!

I don’t ride motorcycles… but I bought one two years ago, and rode it for like, four miles…
