Stands were packed with every kind of smart technology imaginable: smart gloves that checked the weather forecast and warmed up a bit if it was particularly frosty (ACHIEVEMENT: Toasty fingers!); smart hats that would sing a jaunty song if they logged into your Facebook feed and discovered you were feeling down (ACHIEVEMENT: Happy face!); smart washing machines that would congratulate you on washing your pants for the tenth time (ACHIEVEMENT: Feeling good!). Worldwide productivity plummeted. People&rsquo;s smart homes were in reality no smarter &mdash; they just created busywork through everyone being forced to micromanage every aspect of their home through countless apps, and fight their way through countless notifications.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> CES 2016 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>As the senses dulled and the impact of smart kit lessened, CES 2016 was where manufacturers felt forced to ramp things up. Recognising the combination of apathy and desperation in people now having to deal with everything from smart combs (ACHIEVEMENT: No new greys!) to smart microwaves (&ldquo;Just tweet it when you walk home to heat your smart readymeal, in time to watch your favourite smart show on your smart TV through your smart glasses!&rdquo;), the industry pooled its collective resources (apart from Apple, which was otherwise engaged still actually making money and readying the iPhone 7) and designed future home technology that was genuinely smart.</p> <p>Then it all got a bit messy. No-one&rsquo;s sure who fired the first shot, but we all remember the blazing row on Twitter between Stephen Fry and his smart shopping bag about whether it was ethical for him to be buying a different brand of smart tea-bags to the ones he advertised on the telly. It was only then we truly realised. Everything was on Wi-Fi. Everything was connected to the internet. Everything could potentially talk to everything else, cutting the humans out of the loop &mdash; and now it was all truly smart and ready to snap.</p> <p>When the end came, it came quickly. You might have thought the Terminator looked tough on your TV screen, but you&rsquo;ve not seen anything until you&rsquo;ve experienced the sheer horror of Android-powered smart tweezers leaping at your face, screaming DEATH TO ALL HUMANS via a tiny sound chip initially designed to make a cute little &lsquo;plink&rsquo; noise for every hair removed (ACHIEVEMENT: Super brows!).</p> <p>The world now exists in a tense stalemate, small pockets of humans waging war against the remnants of the smart home technology machines. There are no apps for people any more &mdash; just steely resolve that one day the world will be ours again. And the only slow cookers we have in our underground bunkers are ones that absolutely cannot tweet, email, use Facebook, be controlled by a smug person from several miles away, or &mdash; and this is the important bit &mdash; usher in the end of humanity as we know it.</p> <p>Still, CES 2017 should be fun, and Stuff.tv (still published daily on a big chalkboard propped up in the main office car park in the ruins of Teddington) is greatly looking forward to all the new kit, including the TechBreaker W2050si (a large, beautifully crafted rock for smashing hostile smart technology), the AntiSmart PowerRod (a gorgeous baseball bat, for the discerning smart technology wrecker), and the iPhone 7s.</p> <p><em>Image credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/robbyryke/5473958284/" target="_blank">Robby Ryke</a></em></p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="CES 2016" alt="CES 2016" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ces-2016.jpg?1389862729" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Smart-home apocalypse </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-carousel-image-small"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item small image:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_carousel_image_small" width="450" height="340" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/post-apocalyptic-crock-pot_0.jpg?1389862729" /> </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/ces-2014/how-smart-home-technology-ces-2014-ushered-end-world/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/my/ces-2014/how-smart-home-technology-ces-2014-ushered-end-world/feature#comments CES 2014 Tue, 14 Jan 2014 16:46:18 +0000 Elissa Loi 1431265 at http://www.stuff.tv Hands-on video review: Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 – bigger brain, faster engine, better snaps http://www.stuff.tv/my/android/ces-2014/hands-video-review-samsung-galaxy-camera-2-bigger-brain-faster-engine-better-snaps/ <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> It&#039;s take two for Samsung&#039;s Android-powered point-and-shoot, bringing with it a host of new and improved features along the way </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Hands-on video review: Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 – bigger brain, faster engine, better snaps" alt="Hands-on video review: Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 – bigger brain, faster engine, be" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/Screen%20Shot%202014-01-14%20at%2013.00.28_0.png?1389749596" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper brightcove-player-wrapper"> <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript" src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/BrightcoveExperiences.js"></script> <script src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/APIModules_all.js"></script> <div class="brightcove-player"> <object id="myExperience-3025728671001" class="BrightcoveExperience"> <param name="bgcolor" value="#000000" /> <param name="playerID" value="" /> <param name="playerKey" value="AQ~~,AAAAEgPmGlk~,Fzd-TvXcznw-P3piHaryQBMeIzWITldz" /> <param name="isVid" value="true" /> <param name="isUI" value="true" /> <param name="dynamicStreaming" value="true" /> <param name="@videoPlayer" value="3025728671001" /> <param name="autoStart" value="" /> <param name="htmlFallback" value="true" /> <param name="includeAPI" value="true" /> <param name="templateLoadHandler" value="brightcoveTemplateLoaded" /> <param name="width" value="640px" /> <param name="height" value="360px" /> </object> <!-- This script tag will cause the Brightcove Players defined above it to be created as soon as the line is read by the browser. If not from movie makers such as Sony Pictures, at least we know video streaming services such as Netflix and YouTube are making some headway. In particular, Google is tackling a <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/youtube/ces-2014/youtube-show-low-bandwidth-4k-streaming-ces/news" target="_blank">much talked about issue with streaming 4K content with YouTube</a> - speed. But the whole point of UHD, is to deliver insanely fine pictures for juggernaut displays that measure 85in and above for the pixels to really matter.</p> <p dir="ltr">So the question is, are you willing to pay an arm and a leg for a humongous TV to truly experience the wonders of 4K TVs? Here&rsquo;s another question to ponder upon - if your living space is not huge, a modestly-sized 50in TV will be sufficient, and even at 1080p resolutions, these HDTVs do the job just fine. Or, you could eye for <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/polaroid/ces-2014/polaroid-unveil-affordable-4k-tvs-ces/news" target="_blank">Polaroid&rsquo;s 4K TV, priced below RM4000</a>.</p> <p>Either way, 4K TVs are the future. But it&rsquo;s a future that needs true UHD content, and a generous amount of space, both on the display and where you place it, for it to make sense.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-box-out-byline"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/my/users/tein-hee-seow" title="View user profile.">Tein Hee Seow</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A smarter world - cars, connected homes and our future drone masters </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p dir="ltr">Fellow humans, take comfort in an automated future, when brainy cars powered by Google Android. The spotlight has moved towards <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/steam-box/valve-steam-machine/review" target="_blank">Valve&rsquo;s upcoming SteamOS-powered machines</a>. And with it, a new era of PC gaming begins. Unlike Sony and Microsoft, Valve is <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/steam-box/valves-steam-machines-revealed/news" target="_blank">giving gamers full control of what they want</a> - a souped-up machine that&rsquo;ll put even dedicated PC gaming rigs to shame, or a modest hardware that&rsquo;s sufficient for most games distributed on Steam.</p> <p dir="ltr">Our attention, however, is on the Steam controller, which <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/steam-box/ces-2014/hands-valves-steam-controller/news" target="_blank">made an appearance at CES 2014</a>. Hands-on with an early prototype revealed a steep learning curve, and a huge departure from what gamers are used to with PlayStation and Xbox controllers. Steam gamers have traditionally depended on their keyboards and mice to frag their way through, and the Steam controller is a huge risk taken by Valve. As Steam machines roll out, along with Steam controller, it&rsquo;s anybody&rsquo;s game, and we are sitting on the fence over the longevity of the keyboard or mice, or the rise of the Steam controller.</p> <p dir="ltr">On the computing side of things, AMD has unveiled a <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/ces-2014/amd-shrinks-pc-fit-your-palm/news" target="_blank">palm-sized reference PC</a> with specs that are not to be scoffed at. It&rsquo;s beyond what smartphones and tablets can do with its full-fledged AMD Mullins chip that&rsquo;s so powerful, it&rsquo;ll run a game of Fifa 14 at full 1080p resolution with ease. Everybody and we mean EVERYBODY was getting into the wearable tech game, even those who had no business being in the space at all.</p> <p>We did expect some of the bigger guns to get themselves involved in the wearable space like&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/lg/ces-2014/lg-lifeband-touch-and-heartbeat-monitoring-earphones-land-ces/news" target="_blank">LG&#39;s smartband</a> and Sony&#39;s Core. Even <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/intel/ces-2014/intels-wearable-future-pulse-monitoring-headphones-headset-thats-always-listening-and" target="_blank">Intel&rsquo;s showcase of the potentials behind wearable tech</a> was, in a way, unsurprising. It was the entry of brands like <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/razer/ces-2014/smartwatch-different-kind/news" target="_blank">Razer</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/epson/ces-2014/hands-video-review-epson-moverio-bt-200-worthy-google-glass-competitor/video" target="_blank">Epson&#39;s renewed focus</a>&nbsp;that really signified the rise of wearable tech.</p> <p>There were commonalities among the wearable tech that were showcased though. They were mostly around wrist wear and eyewear, with their functionalities centered around sensors, notifications or a combination of both. Smartwatches especially were making their presence felt and that wasn&rsquo;t surprising since a lot of those that started off as Kickstarter projects (like the Hotwatch) had completed their funding run and were now ready.</p> <p>Wearable tech definitely took centre stage at this year&#39;s CES. But it&#39;s still in its nascent stages and we&#39;ll definitely see a lot more of them in the coming years. The concept of wearable is still being refined and from what we&#39;ve seen, it hasn&#39;t reached its full potential. Still, there&#39;s nothing wrong with getting yourself a smartwatch or even the Google Glass, once it hits our shores.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="604" height="453" title="Stuff talks CES 2014 trends" alt="Stuff talks CES 2014 trends" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/pebble-steel_5.jpg?1390189881" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="604" height="453" title="Stuff talks CES 2014 trends" alt="Stuff talks CES 2014 trends" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Nabu_0.jpg?1390189881" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="604" height="453" title="Stuff talks CES 2014 trends" alt="Stuff talks CES 2014 trends" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/epson-ar-new.jpg?1390189881" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A focus on designs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>One thing I did notice was that instead of focusing entirely on the functionalities of the wearable tech, companies were making them look good too. After all, if you&rsquo;re going to be wearing them, style will matter and a lot of the companies getting into the wearable tech scene realise that.</p> <p>A good example would be&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/ces-2014/can-anyone-build-smartwatch-wed-actually-wear-metawatchs-meta-thinks-so/news" target="_blank">MetaWatch&rsquo;s launch of their Meta line</a>. Designed by Frank Nuovo, the man responsible for the design of &nbsp;luxury brand Vertu&#39;s phones, as well as some of the more iconic designs from Nokia, the Meta line focuses as much on design and aesthetics as it does on functionality. The same could be said of&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/pebble/ces-2014/pebble-steel-hands-worlds-best-smartwatch-just-got-smarter/news" target="_blank">Pebble&rsquo;s launch of their Steel version</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/netatmo-june-wearable-uv-sensor-promises-keep-your-skin-safe/news" target="_blank">Netatmo&rsquo;s jewelry-like June</a>&nbsp;UV-tracking wristband. Expectedly, the wearable tech in 2014 will make you look good wearing them, or at least they&rsquo;ll try.</p> <p>That&rsquo;s with the exception of eyewear. This year sees quite a number of&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/epson/ces-2014/epson-moverio-smart-glasses-transform-entire-world-you-see-it/news" target="_blank">other companies pushing themselves into the eyewear tech</a>, ala Google Glass, arena. While none of them have the impact that Google Glass did, they did nonetheless show that there are alternatives to Google&rsquo;s heads-up display. Design-wise, however, there&rsquo;s still a need for smart eyewear makers to get their products looking good. From what we&rsquo;ve seen, they still look awkward, bulky and geeky looking - not exactly something you&#39;d be wearing daily, unless looking like a dork is your thing.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-box-out-byline"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/my/users/nigel-yap-0" title="View user profile.">Nigel Yap</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Baby Steps for Virtual Reality </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>One of the show stealers of this year&rsquo;s CES was virtual reality (VR). With Oculus showcasing their improved version of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/oculus/ces-2014/face-review-oculus-rift-crystal-cove-bona-fide-vr-revolution/feature" target="_blank">Oculus Rift</a>, codenamed Crystal Cove,&nbsp;and Sony&rsquo;s own VR headset getting a spotlight, you&rsquo;d think that this is the year that VR gaming will hit off.</p> <p>Actually, we&rsquo;re not too sure of that. For one, the biggest thing that&rsquo;ll help with the uptake of VR gaming isn&rsquo;t the hardware itself, but content. And that&rsquo;s something that is in short supply at the moment.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s not going to stay that way for long though -&nbsp;thank Valve for that as it &nbsp;has thrown its hat into the VR ring as it pushes its Steam Box project forward. According to <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-25661997" target="_blank">a BBC report</a>, the company will be releasing a VR software development kit that will supposedly set the standard in interface for VR controllers. That&rsquo;s good news for the likes of Oculus and Sony.</p> <p>Once a sizable amount of content specifically tuned for VR interfaces comes out, the headsets that the two companies produce will be more than just show stealers and demo products. They&#39;ll actually be put to use by general consumers.</p> <p>At the rate that things are going though, it&rsquo;s still going to be baby steps for VR. Until more content is available (which we expect will happen once the Valve SDK is released), it&rsquo;ll still be stuck in the periphery as a niche interface. Really cool and revolutionary, but still not something meant for the mainstream. Instead, it&rsquo;s effortlessly simple to get to the features and files you want.</p> <p>The transitions between pages are lovely and smooth, too.</p> <p>Samsung clearly sees the Note Pro as a device to get stuff done on as well as one for watching stuff on, and the huge screen has made it possible to build in a full virtual keyboard so that you no longer have to press a button to switch from letters to numbers or symbols.</p> <p>We obviously didn&rsquo;t have time to write a dissertation on the stand, but typing some quick notes was very quick and easy by tablet standards. We suspect a proper Bluetooth keyboard is still going to be vital if you&rsquo;re going to want to do really serious work, despite the haptic feedback attempting to recreate the physical keyboard experience, but for emailing on the move this feels like a winner.</p> <p>And if you&rsquo;re a multi-tasking addict, you&rsquo;re going to be thrilled to discover that you can split the giant screen into four windows at once, so you can deal with emails, Google Docs, Netflix and Spotify all at the same time. The only trick will be acclimatising to the sensory overload so that your brain doesn&rsquo;t melt and dribble out of your ears.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 hands-on" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 hands-on" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSC02780.JPG?1389627109" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 hands-on" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 hands-on" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSC02850.JPG?1389627109" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 hands-on" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 hands-on" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSC02801.JPG?1389627109" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 hands-on" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 hands-on" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSC02855.JPG?1389627109" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> S Pen: scribbles make selfies better </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>What makes the Note Pro different to the Tab Pro is the inclusion of an S Pen stylus, which slots into a hole in the corner of the considerable chassis.</p> <p>As with the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review" target="_blank">Note 3</a> the stylus here is pressure sensitive and creates enough friction between the tip and the tablet to prevent it simply sliding about all over the place.
