The company&#39;s plan is to make fairly affordable and quick-to-manufacture bionic hands and it thinks that 3D printing is the key.</p> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Giving someone a hand, literally </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>What makes the difference in YouBionic&#39;s model is the Arduino microcontroller that works by using sensors and actuator motors. The sensor reads an impulse sent and then the motor could translate that impulse into a command to work the motors.</p> <p>To read a muscle&#39;s electrical impulse, it would take three electrodes. A red electrode at the centre, blue one at the end and then a black electrode toward the bone close to the muscle.</p> <p>3D printing would then fashion the YouBionic hand, using a schematic. As the Arduino component is fairly cheap, running on open source software, YouBionic believes that its prosthetics will also be able to be made for a reasonable price.</p> <p>Currently the YouBionic prosthetic hand is still a work-in-progress, made entirely out of plastic but YouBionic plans to add rubber to the design to help make actions like pinch grips easier.</p> <p>It&#39;s an exciting prospect and a great example of 3D printing being used to make things that aren&#39;t just cool but life changing.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/ralph-lauren-s-new-smart-t-shirt-tracks-your-health/news">Ralph Lauren&#39;s t-shirt keeps an eye on your vitals</a></p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.digitaltrends.com/cool-tech/meet-youbionic-com-worlds-advanced-artificial-hand/" target="_blank">Digitaltrends</a>]</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/O9rQobseYbA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/my/youbionic-means-help-you-3d-print-your-own-prosthetic-hand/news#comments 3D printers 3D Printing Thu, 20 Nov 2014 06:58:00 +0000 Erna Mahyuni 1453584 at http://www.stuff.tv iBox Nano is the world’s smallest, cheapest 3D resin printer http://www.stuff.tv/my/ibox-nano-world-s-smallest-cheapest-3d-resin-printer/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Oh, and it prints from pretty much anything with a web browser </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iBox Nano is the world’s smallest, cheapest 3D resin printer" alt="iBox Nano is the world’s smallest, cheapest 3D resin printer" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/ibox-nano-hotstuff.jpg?1414459804" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/my/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Wow, here&rsquo;s another overpriced, hulking 3D printer that I&rsquo;m not going to buy&hellip;</strong><br />No! It comes with 95ml of resin in one of three colours. The downside is that these rewards won&rsquo;t be available until April 2015. Still, plenty of time to save up for more resin.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/826799607/ibox-nano-worlds-smallest-least-expensive-3d-print" target="_blank">Kickstarter</a>]</p> <p><strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/hot-stuff">SEE MORE HOT STUFF HERE</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iBox Nano" alt="iBox Nano" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ibox-nano-black.jpg?1414459804" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/my/ibox-nano-world-s-smallest-cheapest-3d-resin-printer/news#comments 3D printers Hot Stuff Mon, 27 Oct 2014 16:19:06 +0000 Elissa Loi 1451515 at http://www.stuff.tv Amazon now tries to be one-stop 3D printing marketplace http://www.stuff.tv/my/amazon/amazon-now-tries-be-one-stop-3d-printing-marketplace/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 3D printers, scanners, and refills are all now available online </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="567" height="425" title="Amazon now tries to be one-stop 3D printing marketplace" alt="Amazon now tries to be one-stop 3D printing marketplace" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/3d%20printing%20store.jpg?1407043409" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>If you&#39;d rather not resort to just another Kickstarter or other crowdfunding site to start 3D printing then maybe Amazon might be your best friend. All you need is a 3D printer in a shipping container and you can ship housing solutions anywhere in the world. Printing the components of houses from the ground up means minimal waste, and a Chinese company has even pioneered <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/technology/video/2014/apr/29/3d-printer-builds-houses-china-video" target="_blank">printing houses from construction waste.</a> A 3D house printer is basically the real world realisation of the Command &amp; Conquer Mobile Construction Vehicle - you can deploy it practically anywhere and with the right materials you can print a whole city&rsquo;s worth of buildings.</p> <p dir="ltr">This technology could be very helpful in disaster stricken areas, where just after a quick setup, we would able to print brand new and structurally safe housing solutions for victims who have lost their homes, possibly even out of the reduced waste materials from fallen buildings. So it&rsquo;s not just for annoying eco-warriors to show off their new sustainable abodes then&hellip;</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/meet-minibuilders-drones-can-3d-print-house/news">Meet the Minibuilders: Drones that can 3D print a house</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/OYqBxEAtXZA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Print your own Boomstick! </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p dir="ltr">A lot of the attention, not to mention controversy, that focused on 3D printing happened in 2013 when the design for the first 3D-printable working plastic gun was made open source and released online by Defense Distributed.</p> <p dir="ltr">Even though the US government made the designers take the plans off their site, thanks to the Internet, designs for the &ldquo;Liberator&rdquo; are still floating around in cyberspace for the industrious DIY firearms enthusiast. So now 3D hobbyists all over the world are armed (sorry, couldn&rsquo;t resist) with the tools to make their own plastic handguns. Like this <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/may/08/japanese-man-arrested-guns-3d-printer" target="_blank">Japanese fellow</a>, who posted videos of himself operating some of his six printed guns and ended up being arrested.</p> <p dir="ltr">Homemade plastic handguns pose a real threat to safety - they are undetectable by metal detectors and can be assembled by any nut with a 3D printer and an internet connection. Sure, they can&rsquo;t do much without bullets, but having a working gun is already one uncomfortable step closer to killing someone than not having a gun.</p> <p dir="ltr">So that&rsquo;s why the latest rise of 3D printing has governments worried - its economical and technological benefits come with the risk of uncontrolled and widespread gun ownership. Even with regulation, gun-related violence is often on the top of news, so we can only imagine the chaos if schoolchildren started printing their own guns and bringing them to school. We can only hope that this risk doesn&rsquo;t tarnish the image of the technological renaissance that 3D printing has recently attained, and governments don&rsquo;t start banning 3D printers altogether.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/IylGx-48TUI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Are you a 3D believer yet? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p dir="ltr">As with any technological game-changer, the future of 3D-printing is exciting and uncertain. No mention if mascara is included though, as the website only mentions &quot;wearable colour cosmetics&quot;, but Choi says what&#39;s possible will depend on &#39;business decisions&#39; as opposed to actual limitations.</p> <p>The makeup produced is created from FDA-approved substrates, and Choi&#39;s demo at the Disrupt convention in New York showed how easily powder eyeshadow was created just by taking the shade from a YouTube video.</p> <p>You can easily sample a shade from photographs, videos, or swatches. The Internet then becomes your online shopping store without actually having to shop for products, just the colour.</p> <p>Choi states that makeup margins (as high as 38%) are the highest compared to all other products. Mink, as it doesn&#39;t have to actually produce the makeup, has much lower margins, which is great news for consumers.</p> <p>Head on over to the Mink website and <a href="http://gracemink.com/" No. The EX1 has been forged by Cartesian Co. not to print out last minute anniversary cards, but to&nbsp;print out circuits.</p> <p>Yep. As in, electronic circuit boards. On paper. Or on plenty of other materials in fact.</p> <p>The EX1 does away with the hassle of etching a PCB and instead uses two inkjet cartridges which lay down two different chemicals which, when combined, create conductive silver nano particles.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/my/users/esat-dedezade" title="View user profile.">Esat Dedezade</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Print on all the things </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Materials that can be printed on include plastic, glass, ceramic, wood, silicon, fabric and paper – opening up a whole world of possibilities if you've got the imagination to go with it.</p> <p>And if you don't want to solder the circuits, conductive glue will work just as well. Cartesian Co. promises that users won't be gouged for refills like existing standard printer ink cartridges and the whole package is wrapped up in a printer that weighs no more than 6kg.</p> <p>At the time of writing, the cheapest Kickstarter package available is US$1200 (RM3836), plus an extra US$500 (RM1598) if you want the printer assembled for you, so <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cartesianco/the-ex1-rapid-3d-printing-of-circuit-boards" target="_blank">head on over</a> and show your support if you want to help the EX1 reach its US$30,000 goal.</p> <p><strong>UPDATE:</strong>&nbsp;The Cartesian Co. has now smashed its Kickstarter target with US$75,872 (RM243,663) and counting – that's more than double their initial target with the project open until December 11th.
