Ever since the first digital tablet was released back in 2010, we have since seen various evolutionary follow-ups with different sizes from 7 inches to a whopping 18.7 inches. Aside from varying sizes, digital tablet evolution also include tablets with different purposes such as drawing, photo editing, and even specifically for multimedia consumption. This brings us to the Huawei Mediapad M5, their latest 8 inch tablet.
At first glance, the Huawei Mediapad M5 has a solid aluminium frame build with a very sleek design, which gives out a premium feel when held in our hands. A sim card slot and external storage slot can be found on the left side, while a volume rocker and power button is located on the right, and finally a USB type C port at the bottom of this device.
It has an impressive display featuring a 2k screen with 2560 x 1600 pixels of resolution and over 350 ppi which delivers great images and video playback. The Mediapad M5’s viewing angles is above average - with high brightness capacity which even under direct sunlight, one would still be able to view the display with minor difficulties.
Featuring Harman Kardon tuned stereo speakers, the Mediapad M5 is no doubt one of the best tablets out there for having loud, clear, and crisp sounding audio with no sound breaking even at its loudest volume setting. This tablet is definitely louder than most portable device in the market right now with a strong bass sound that many other tablets and phones fail to deliver.
As for the cameras, they are nothing out of the ordinary, but that doesn’t mean it fails entirely to capture decent photos or videos. The front facing camera is very straightforward when taking selfies with its large 8 inch screen display that can even be used a mirror for some. The Mediapad M5 only is able to record at a maximum quality of full HD which suffices for casual video recordings.
One thing Huawei has done amazingly with the Mediapad M5 is the battery life. This device has a 5000mAh battery complimented with an optimized user interface and operating software that is more than capable of lasting for a few days. With minimal usage, this device will last at least three whole days, and when power saving mode is switched on, it could last even longer.
The Huawei Mediapad M5 is able to handle every mobile game thrown at it, but with a large display of 8 inches, a noticeable dip in graphics quality is apparent due to the optimization of some games are for smaller displays. Nevertheless, games such as asphalt, dynasty warriors and even minecraft works tremendously well with this device.
A personal gripe, it would have been great if a 3.5mm jack was included in this device, but Huawei did add in a 3.5mm adapter as as substitute. Another thing would be the size of the RAM as it is only 4GB in capacity, where slowdowns would occur when running or juggling between multiple apps. The lag isn’t severe nor often, but it’s noticeable.
Overall, the Huawei Mediapad M5 is an ideal device for portability and an all rounder device for media consumption such as watching movies on Netflix, gaming, listening to music, or reading an e-book. With a relatively reasonable price of more or less RM1500, the Mediapad M5 is a remarkable device and one I’d recommend to those looking for an entertainment-based tablet.
