Apple has finally unwrapped the latest iteration of the iPad Mini (which, for the sake of argument, we're calling the iPad Mini 2) – and yes, it has a long-rumoured and much-craved Retina Display.

A 7.9in 2048x1536 Retina Display, to be more precise. That places the iPad Mini 2 in the same league as the Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire HDX, with a 326ppi count.

But what else is new?

Faster on the inside

The iPad Mini 2 has had a substantial spec boost over its predecessor, packing the blistering fast 64-bit A7 processor and M7 motion co-processor found in the iPhone 5s. The A7, Apple claims, will deliver 4x faster performance and 8x faster graphics than the previous iPad Mini.

The iPad Mini 2 packs a 5MP iSight camera with f/2.4 aperture that'll shoot 1080p HD video, while around the front there's a 1.2MP FaceTime HD camera that's capable of 720p HD video.

The iPad Mini 2 also crams in 802.11n Wi-Fi with MIMO for up to 300Mbps speeds – plus LTE and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity. Although the battery is smaller, Apple claimes that the iPad Mini 2 will deliver the same 10-hour battery life as the previous iPad Mini – something we'll be checking on closely in our full review.

We'll be getting hands-on with both the iPad Mini 2 and its big brother, the iPad Air – so stay tuned for our first impressions.

Mini, where forth art thou?

If the iPad Mini 2 sounds like the shrunken tablet you've been searching for, you'll have to wait a while more for it to land in Malaysia. The closest estimate is its Singapore pricing, pegged at S$548 for the 16GB, Wi-Fi only version. 32GB, 64GB and 128GB versions are available for S$688, S$828 and US$968 respectively. The LTE model will set you back S$728 for the 16GB version, while 32GB, 64GB and 128GB models will cost S$870, S$1008 and S$1148.

Meanwhile, the original iPad Mini gets a minute price cut, down to RM949 from RM999.
