They look extremely similar - they&#39;re large DSLRs, but not ones with the gigantic battery that makes cameras such as the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/nikon-d4s/review">Nikon D4S</a> look like they&#39;ve been chomping down on steroids.</p> <p>What&#39;s new in the design? Nikon has altered the grips for your right hand on the back and front a bit, making them more pronounced.</p> <p>You&#39;d need to know this, or own a <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/d800/nikon-reveals-363mp-d800-dslr/news">D800</a>, to notice, but either way the Nikon D810 offers grip firmer than the handshake of a 5ft army general with short man syndrome. It is worth noting quite how large the camera is if you&#39;re upgrading from a compact system camera or lower-end DSLR, though.</p> <p>On its own the D810 weighs 980g with battery. We tested the camera with the excellent 24-70mm f2.8 lens, which weighs about the same again. It&#39;s a hefty package, and we imagine many people eyeing-up this camera may be considering a real high-performance lens like this. However, even with the cheap, light and cheerful 50mm f1.8, you&#39;re still looking at a bulk of over a kilogram. That&#39;s as much as some laptops.</p> <p>It&#39;s also the sort of size that fills rucksacks, especially if you&#39;re going to carry around a lens or two. However, as you&#39;d hope, manual control is fantastic as a pay-off. There&#39;s a wealth of control dials and customisable function modes, and the current settings are all telegraphed with fantastic clarity through the top monochrome LCD and the optical viewfinder&#39;s OLED overlay.</p> <p>The manual control dials all have the sort of reassuring clunky thunk that fits in perfectly with the lovely shutter sound and feel that you only really get with a real DSLR.</p> <p>Build quality is fantastic, too. Aside from some plastic or rubber outer parts, the frame of the Nikon D810 is made of magnesium alloy, and it feels tough as nails. This should also help quiet any people complaining about the weight of the camera. Magnesium is harder and lighter than aluminium (although this is a magnesium-aluminium alloy).</p> <p>Get this in your hands and you know instantly: this is the real deal. And it&#39;s weatherproof, too, perfect for shooting on rainy days, as long as the lens you use is also going to be safe.</p> <p>Of course, all this applied to the Nikon D800E, and Nikon hasn&#39;t been silly enough to release a new camera without any improvements. One of the first you may notice is the new screen.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/olympus/olympus-om-d-e-m1/review">Olympus OM-D EM-1 reviewed&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="A rucksack filler " alt="Nikon D810 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/d820-4.jpg?1411183279" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="And all-round hefty package " alt="Nikon D810 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/d810-10.jpg?1411183279" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Hand me the white LED </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The 3.2-inch display on the back is the same size as 2012&#39;s models, but resolution has been increased from 921k dots to 1229k. Rather than a traditional increase in sharpness, Nikon has bunged an extra white subpixel into the usual red-green-blue sub pixel array.</p> <p>What this means, for the non-screen-nerds out there, is that the D810 can dramatically increase the brightness of the rear display without using loads of extra juice - white pixels are perfect for doing this. Taking a further step back, this means the rear screen can offer great outdoors visibility even on sunny days without ruining the simply excellent 1,200 shot battery life.</p> <p>While we tried the Nikon D810 out in Margate rather than Miami (yes, really), where the sun wasn&#39;t exactly dazzling, it is impressive stuff regardless. Of course, most of you will want to peer through the viewfinder 99 per cent of the time anyway. That&#39;s especially as the optical viewfinder offers a crystal clear view with an excellent read-out of what your camera&#39;s up to, settings-wise.</p> <p>The viewfinder is great, but some might say the lack of an EVF is an oversight. These sorts of impersonation viewfinders generally look a lot worse than pure optical viewfinders like the Nikon D810&#39;s but they allow things like focus peaking as they&#39;re totally digital.</p> <p>Focus peaking is where the crispy bits around in-focus objects are highlighted to make manual focusing easier but it&#39;s missing from the D810, even when the rear display is used to compose a photo. When going fully manual, you have to focus by eye a good deal more than we&#39;d like.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The viewfinder&#039;s a bit of a pretender " alt="Nikon D810 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/d810-13.jpg?1411183279" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Not quite features galore </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>There are also several other features missing from the Nikon D810 that are present in loads of cameras, including ones several orders of magnitude cheaper. You don&#39;t get Wi-Fi or 4K video recording. The former is just a niggle given how poorly Wi-Fi is normally implemented in cameras, but the lack of 4K video is a real bummer.</p> <p>The Panasonic GH4 has become a real hero among video fans because of its good 4K video capture, and not having it here is a huge missed opportunity. This camera&#39;s arch rival the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/canon/canon-unleashes-eos-5d-mark-iii/news">Canon 5D MKIII</a> doesn&#39;t have 4K video either, but then that&#39;s two years old just like the Nikon D810&#39;s predecessors.</p> <p>Predecessors? Yep, there are two cameras that the D810 is replacing: the Nikon D800 and 800E. One has an anti-aliasing filter (the non-E model), one doesn&#39;t. Like several other recent high-end cameras, the Nikon D810 ditches the anti-aliasing filter altogether and that&#39;s actually a good thing.&nbsp;It sounds like a positive feature, and does have its uses, but it&#39;s a compromise as the filter reduces sharpness ever-so-slightly.&nbsp;</p> <p>The Nikon D810 takes both CF and SD cards, with two slots hidden under a flap. If you&#39;re going to shoot in NEF (Nikon&#39;s version of RAW), you&#39;ll want a massive memory card too, as photos can reach close to 80MB. Each. Even fine quality JPGs are 20MB or so.&nbsp;</p> <p>Such massive amounts of data is what makes the USB 3.0 port on the side pretty handy. It&#39;s not going to cause as much fuss as (missing) 4K video, but if you have a recent laptop it&#39;ll speed-up transfers without you having to take out the card.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/panasonic/panasonic-lumix-gh4/review">Panasonic GH4 4K camera tested&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The D810 is missing a few features " alt="Nikon D810 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/d810-14.jpg?1411183279" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Nikon D810 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <ul> <li>Sensor: 36.3MP, Full Frame, CMOS</li> <li>Lens: F Mount</li> <li>ISO: 64-12,800 native range</li> <li>Flash: yes</li> <li>Video: 1080p/60fps</li> <li>Connectivity: miniHDMI, external mic socket, microUSB 3.0</li> <li>Storage: SD, SDHC, SDXC, Compact Flash</li> <li>Dimensions: 146 x 123 x 81.5mm</li> <li>Weight: 980g (880g without battery)&nbsp;</li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Star-grade papping </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>And as you&#39;d hope, image quality is otherwise absolutely fantastic. Despite having the same size and resolution sensor as the older Nikon D800E, the D810 actually has a new sensor and it&#39;s one that can render absolutely loads of detail with a nice, sharp lens.</p> <p>The Nikon D810 provides really quite superb dynamic range too, meaning you get detail in bright clouds that might be overexposed in lesser cameras, for beautiful sunsets without using an HDR mode.</p> <p>There is an inbuilt HDR mode in the D810, but we honestly found it too slow to use handheld. Unless you use a tripod, you&#39;ll find clear ghosting - something smartphones use clever programming to avoid. &nbsp;</p> <p>Photos aren&#39;t going to be in a completely different league to the D800E, and we&#39;re not entirely sure it&#39;s worth the upgrade if you already own the older camera and don&#39;t make a living off your photos. And that means you can shoot in virtually any lighting condition, generally without needing a tripod for stability. As long as you don&#39;t need real pro-quality shots, that is.</p> <p>As long as you know what settings not to use, it doesn&#39;t half make shooting fairly decent shots easy.&nbsp;ISO sensitivity goes from 64 all the way up to 12,800, an absolutely huge native range that can be expanded to 32 - 51,200. Obviously, you won&#39;t want to get anywhere near the top end if you want to avoid noisy photos, but with the Nikon D810 you can push the ISO setting far more than you can with an APS-C or smaller sensor camera. Like the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/olympus/olympus-om-d-e-m1/review">Olympus OM-D EM-1</a>, much as we love it.</p> <p>Focusing is lightning fast, and there are 51 focus points, 15 of which are cross-focus. These cross points use a team of two phase detection sensors, analysing light horizontally and vertically for even better focusing reliability.</p> <p>The Nikon D810 is very impressive on this front, although looking at the numbers the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/canon/canon-unleashes-eos-5d-mark-iii/news">Canon 5D MKIII </a>does get you even more, with 61 points, 41 of which are cross-type points. Of course, phase detection only applies when you&#39;re using the viewfinder. Switch to Live View, which uses the rear screen as the preview window, and the D810 switches to slower contrast detection.</p> <p>Rather like the somewhat-unfriendly approach to HDR, the D810 doesn&#39;t have in-body image stabilisation. So while you can up the ISO to allow faster shutter speeds without huge underexposure, you can&#39;t indulge in slightly slower shutter speeds handheld unless you&#39;re using a lens with OIS.</p> <p>The D810&#39;s Expeed 4 processor lets you shoot at 5fps at full 36.3-megapixel resolution. That&#39;s a full frame per second more than the D800E. Of course, if you want remotely fast burst shooting you will want to invest in a super-fast card.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Plenty of light sensitivity to push " alt="Nikon D810 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/d810-12.jpg?1411183279" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1600" height="900" title="Focus is lightning fast " alt="Nikon D810 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/d810-s-6.jpg?1411183279" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="2300" height="1347" title="With these big file sizes, cropping becomes useful " alt="Nikon D810 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/D810-crop-1_0.jpg?1411183279" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Nikon D810 Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Nikon D810 is a monster camera. Despite having a new sensor and screen, the experience and results are not all that different from what&#39;s on offer in the Nikon D800E. Making good cameras better is always welcome, after all. Both cameras also get the Classic Chrome film simulation mode first seen in the X30, which gives great documentary-style images without the need for editing. </p> <p>The Graphite Silver edition of the X-T1 is largely similar to its predecessor, but the new finish on the camera&rsquo;s metal bits is really quite something. The gun-metal like colour looks fantastic, the result of a complicated six-step process, and the smooth texture succeeds in offering a greater sense of refinement.</p> <p>Button haptics for the arrow pad when pressed are greatly improved with satisfying clicks too, which was one of the few bugbears on the original X-T1. Most of the other upgrades including the electronic shutter will soon be on all X-T1s with a firmware update though, so the only reason to get this would mainly be for the new finish.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="4896" height="3264" title="Fujifilm X-T1 Graphite Silver Edition " alt="Fujifilm X-T1 Graphite Silver Edition " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCF3319.JPG?1411395168" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="4896" height="3264" title="Fujifilm X-T1 Graphite Silver Edition " alt="Fujifilm X-T1 Graphite Silver Edition " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCF3322.JPG?1411395168" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Fujifilm X100T </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p dir="ltr">As for the X100T, it&rsquo;s a nice evolution of last year&rsquo;s X100S, upgrading the advanced hybrid viewfinder with a new graphic interface. True enough, the rumours were spot on with the Canon EOS 7D Mark II&#39;s hardware, with a few new details surfacing. The latest DSLR from the Japanese company also includes a 3in LCD sensor. No touch screen here, it&#39;s all for your viewing pleasure.</p> <p>We had a short session with the 7D Mark II, and safe to say, this is a solid camera. Literally. You can try to smack someone with the densely packed body, but really, that&#39;s not the way to use a high-end DSLR camera. It is tough enough to resist dust and water, definitely something to consider if you&#39;re bringing it along for your next trip.&nbsp;The grip is astounding, even for our mannish hands (by Asian standards).</p> <p>Just be mindful of the 820g weight (body only), so you can imagine how hefty it&#39;ll get with the lenses attached. For example, the new EF400mm f/4 DO IS II USM super-telephoto lens will give your arms a good workout. Smaller options are also available, such as the EF-S24mm f2/8 STM pancake lens (you know you want it for food photos) or the versatile EF24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens.</p> <p>Pricing and availability of the Canon EOS 7D Mark II and the new range of lenses will be announced at a later date.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-box-out-byline"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/my/users/tein-hee-seow" title="View user profile.">Tein Hee Seow</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><legend>Carousel Extras</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-standfirst"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item standfirst:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The next Canon DSLR revealed in leaked snap </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/canon/canon-eos-7d-mark-ii/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/my/canon/canon-eos-7d-mark-ii/news#comments Cameras Canon Photokina 2014 System Cameras Tue, 16 Sep 2014 04:27:57 +0000 Tein Hee Seow 1447372 at http://www.stuff.tv Samsung's new NX1 camera has pro features and a price to match http://www.stuff.tv/my/nx1/samsungs-new-nx1-camera-has-pro-features-and-price-match/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> We love the 28MP APS-C-sensor and 15fps burst shooting </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The new NX1" alt="Samsung&#039;s new NX1 camera has pro features and a price to match" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/samsung-nx-1-main.jpg?1410835280" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Choosing your next high-end compact system cameras just got that bit harder, thanks to the new Samsung NX1.</p> <p>The supper snapper has a big 28MP APS-C sensor with back side illumination (BSI) tech, which is designed to reduce noise in shots.&nbsp;It&#39;s also impressively fast, with a new DRIMe V processor which lets you shoot full-res at up to 15fps, while the super-fast phase detection autofocus offers 205 points that cover virtually the whole sensor.&nbsp;</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/my/users/andrew-williams" title="View user profile.">Andrew Williams</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>In true Samsung style, the NX1 gets you just about every feature under the sun too. It&rsquo;s surprisingly easy to setup, assuming you have a phone with NFC: you simply ensure you have Sony&rsquo;s PlayMemories app (available for both Android and iOS) installed, then touch the QX1&rsquo;s NFC icon with your phone &ndash; in a moment or two, the camera and the phone are connected and you can start snapping away.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-qx1.jpg?1409881578" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The QX1 is solidly built and fairly lightweight considering its innards, although we were using the dinky 16-50mm zoom lens that will be included in one possible package (the QX1 will be &pound;250 alone, or something like &pound;400 with the lens). The camera&rsquo;s new BIONZ X image processing engine helps too, doing a fine job of reducing noise where it appears as well as offering a huge ISO range of 100-25600. With a reasonably fast lens attached, you can snap away in very murky conditions and still end the evening with plenty of usably sharp photos.</p> <p>Speaking of lenses, we should point out that the images we&rsquo;ve posted here were taken with Sony&rsquo;s Zeiss Vario-Tesser 16-70mm f/4 zoom and Zeiss Sonnar 35mm f/2.8 prime lenses. Both are significantly pricier than the A6000 body itself. Cheaper E mount lenses may not perform quite as well.</p> <p>On the video front, the A6000 is able to capture 1080p at 50, 25 or 24fps in either AVCHD or MP4 format. We found the video quality to be excellent and the stereo sound to be clear, even without an external microphone. This, of course, is arguably better than optical, because it can overlay more information on screen and show you a preview of exactly how your shot is going to turn out. If you prefer, you can compose shots using the 3in tilting screen, which works well enough.</p> <p>The physical controls are small out of necessity, but the mode and adjustment dials are pleasingly chunky, and we didn&rsquo;t have any issues with changing settings on the fly using these and the other buttons.</p> <p>One thing we have to highlight is the incredible speed and accuracy of the A6000&rsquo;s autofocus. The A7R felt a little quicker to get a lock, but at this point we&rsquo;re talking milliseconds difference, so perhaps we&rsquo;re just subconsciouly assuming the A7R&rsquo;s hefty price tag makes it the speedier. The A6000 has 179 phase-detection focus points and 25 contrast-detection focus points, and between them they allow the camera to focus almost as soon as you start to press the shutter button. We&rsquo;d say it&rsquo;s faster than any DSLR we&rsquo;ve used.</p> <p>Unlike a lot of system cameras, there&rsquo;s no optical image stabilisation inside the A6000&rsquo;s body. We didn&rsquo;t find it a problem in our few weeks with the camera, as most of Sony&rsquo;s E-mount lenses are either equipped with stabilisation or fast enough to not need it. However, a quick glance through Flickr or Facebook should demonstrate that people still struggle to understand what makes a good monochromatic photo. But Stuff is here to help: we&rsquo;ve put together this short guide to try and help you grasp the black and white basics.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/my/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Contrast is key </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Because black and white photos remove colour, the viewer&rsquo;s attention is focussed on other things. Sharpness, <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/stuffs-guide-photography-what-bokeh-and-how-do-i-get-it/feature">depth of field</a> and composition are of course important, but contrast is arguably the key factor in how much impact a black and white photograph holds.</p> <p>In most black and white images, you&rsquo;ll be looking for big contrasts between the darkest and lightest areas of the image. That&rsquo;s where the drama comes from. If your original photo doesn&rsquo;t have as much contrast as you&rsquo;d like, get it into Photoshop or another editing app and adjust the settings. Remember: a good colour photo won&rsquo;t necessarily make a good black and white one.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/stuffs-guide-photography-what-bokeh-and-how-do-i-get-it/feature">Stuff&rsquo;s Guide to Photography: What is bokeh &ndash; and how do I get it?</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Look to bring bright whites and inky blacks into close proximity" alt="Look to bring bright whites and inky blacks into close proximity" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/photo-guide-black-white-contrast.jpg?1403748800" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Polarising filters are your friend </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If you&rsquo;re shooting for black and white outside on a sunny day, attaching a circular polarising filter will help provide a more dramatic, contrasty monochromatic sky. Blur is bad, right? Not always. Just as you can make nice pictures by blurring the backgrounds with a bit of bokeh, another classic trick every snapper should know is the long exposure: by deliberately picking a slower shutter speed, you can capture smears of motion and dreamy patterns of light that make your picture tell a story. It&#39;s a piece of cake to do - just set up your camera and start mucking about.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/my/users/will-dunn" title="View user profile.">Will Dunn</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Set up and steady </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If you&rsquo;re not an expert on manual settings, fear not. Simply set your camera&rsquo;s mode dial to Shutter Priority, which will be marked &lsquo;S&rsquo; or &lsquo;Tv&rsquo;. This auto-adjusts all the settings apart from the shutter speed, freeing you up to experiment with speeds - try anything from one second to thirty seconds fro long exposures. On some phones, like the Nokia Lumia 920 and 1020, you can set the exposure to several seconds.</p> <p>Your next step is to keep the camera from moving, because if the camera moves while the shutter&rsquo;s open, your picture will be blurrier than Keith Richards&rsquo; memories of the 1970s. So, use a tripod if you&rsquo;ve got one, or a solid resting place like a table or a wall if you haven&rsquo;t. Set the shutter to self-timer, so you&rsquo;re not touching the camera when it takes the picture.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/stuffs-guide-photography-how-take-better-photos-your-kids/feature">how to take better photos of tiny people</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Stuff&#039;s Guide to Photography: how to shoot long exposures" alt="Stuff&#039;s Guide to Photography: how to shoot long exposures" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/shutterpriority.jpg?1404441946" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Try writing your name </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Once you&rsquo;re set up, try a basic bit of &lsquo;light painting&rsquo;: wait until dark, grab a torch and set your exposure time to anything from 10-30 seconds. Move to some traffic lights, for example, and you can get both the stationary cars and the light-streaks of them moving. You can get some dazzling results from fireworks, too - anywhere you see moving lights, get your camera steady and try a few shots, increasing the exposure time with each shot.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/lomography/stuffs-guide-photography-how-shoot-panoramas/feature">how to shoot amazing panoramas</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Stuff&#039;s Guide to Photography: how to shoot long exposures" alt="Stuff&#039;s Guide to Photography: how to shoot long exposures" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/fair.jpg?1404441946" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> use it in the day </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Long exposures aren&rsquo;t just for the night. It&rsquo;s also a great way to convey movement - crowds, moving water and more can be blurred into patterns of frenetic activity by leaving the shutter open a bit longer than usual. Large, lag-free and boasting a resolution so high that you almost feel it&rsquo;s an optical viewfinder and not essentially a live video feed, the OLED EVF shows you exactly how the image you&rsquo;re about take will end up looking: bokeh, exposure adjustments, depth of field are all previewed as you change settings.</p> <p>The 3in rear screen is also worthy of a mention. We rarely used it for composing shots (the EVF is so good, you see), but its tilting mechanism means it comes in useful at those times when it&rsquo;s not convenient to hold the A7R up to your eye: when shooting with it high above your head or low to the ground, for instance.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Weather-proofing means you can use it in outside without too much worry" alt="Weather-proofing means you can use it in outside without too much worry" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7r-review-main.jpg?1401981784" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The A7R&#039;s screen tilts both up and down" alt="The A7R&#039;s screen tilts both up and down" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7r-hand-screen.jpg?1401981784" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A is for Accessories </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Alongside any E-mount lens (and, with Sony&rsquo;s adapter, full-size A-mount lenses too), you can equip the A7R with a wide range of accessories. The top class lens Sony sent us to use with it &ndash; a Carl Zeiss 35mm F2.8 prime &ndash; played a considerable role in that, but the glorious full-frame sensor and Sony&rsquo;s noise-reduction and image-processing technology were just as important.</p> <p>The huge physical size of the 36.4MP sensor helps immensely, as it&rsquo;s capable of capturing a lot of light even with fast shutter speeds. And there&rsquo;s excellent noise suppression, even at high ISO sensitivities, to help reduce unwanted graininess. That means shooting without flash in low light conditions is not only possible but delivers fantastic results: sharp, clean-looking pictures with little sign of noise.</p> <p><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="333" mozallowfullscreen="" msallowfullscreen="" oallowfullscreen="" src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/99712217@N05/14242997182/in/set-72157644794903505/player/" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe></p> <p>In brighter conditions, photos are even better. Because of the large sensor, there&rsquo;s a scale to these images that few DSLRs can touch, and it&rsquo;s also very easy to achieve a narrow depth of field, blurring the background or foreground of shots while keeping your subject in sharp focus.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/stuffs-guide-photography-what-bokeh-and-how-do-i-get-it/feature">Stuff&rsquo;s Guide to Photography: What is bokeh &ndash; and how do I get it?</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="800" title="Sony A7R photo sample" alt="Sony A7R photo sample" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7r-sample-will-matt.jpg?1401981784" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="800" title="Sony A7R photo sample" alt="Sony A7R photo sample" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7r-sample-alice.jpg?1401981784" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="801" title="Sony A7R photo sample" alt="Sony A7R photo sample" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7r-sample-hallway.jpg?1401981784" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Video star </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>These traits extend to the A7R&rsquo;s video footage, which looks utterly glorious &ndash; almost Hollywood-esque in its smoothness. And despite the range of external microphones offered by Sony, the built-in stereo mics do an acceptable job of capturing sound for general shooting purposes.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/sony/sonys-new-alpha-7s-gets-4k-video-output/news">Sony&rsquo;s new Alpha A7s gets 4K video output</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sony A7R tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Sensor</strong> - 36.4MP full-frame CMOS</p> <p><strong>ISO range</strong> - 100-25600</p> <p><strong>Lens</strong> - E-mount system</p> <p><strong>Viewfinder</strong> - 2,359,296-dot OLED</p> <p><strong>Screen</strong> - 3in, 921,600-dot LCD</p> <p><strong>Connectivity</strong> - Micro USB, Micro HDMI, Multi Interface Shoe, Wi-Fi, NFC</p> <p><strong>Dimensions</strong> - 126.9 x 94.4 x 48.2mm</p> <p><strong>Weight</strong> - 465g (body only)</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Usability and connectivity </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The aforementioned chunky grip and buttons make the A7R comfy and secure in your hands, despite its small size, and the sheer amount of controls dotted around the body mean manual shooters can easily adjust settings on the fly. Thankfully there&rsquo;s no need to go fully manual, and Sony&rsquo;s automatic modes are, as ever, scarily clever at determining what kind of thing you&rsquo;re shooting and what the settings need to be.</p> <p>The autofocus here is devilishly quick and accurate. Sony has even given it the ability to recognise the pupils in subject&rsquo;s eyes and focus on them, which keep faces sharp when shooting with a short depth of field.</p> <p>One possible criticism: there&rsquo;s no optical image stabilisation inside the body &ndash; many of Sony&rsquo;s lenses do however come with it equipped. We didn&rsquo;t find it an issue with the fast F2.8 lens, but it could conceivably hamper performance with slower lenses.</p> <p>The camera also comes with Wi-Fi and NFC, which allow you to connect to a smartphone or tablet. Personally, we find this a little pointless &ndash; transferring large images via Wi-Fi to a phone is far slower and fiddlier than it needs to be to become &ldquo;a thing&rdquo;, and transferring them to PC is much easier by cable or memory card. But some might get some use out of Sony&rsquo;s PlayMemories app, which allows remote viewing and remote control of the shutter.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/stuffs-guide-photography-how-and-why-you-should-buy-prime-lens/feature" target="_blank">Stuff&#39;s Guide to Photography: why you need a prime lens, and how to buy one</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Controls are pleasinginly plentiful – and chunky" alt="Controls are pleasinginly plentiful – and chunky" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7r-hand-rear.jpg?1401981784" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Controls are pleasinginly plentiful – and chunky" alt="Controls are pleasinginly plentiful – and chunky" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7r-review-top.jpg?1401981784" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sony A7R verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We love this camera and were less than keen on giving it back to Sony after our two-week review period.
