Taking pictures is one of the main purposes of a smartphone in this day and age. Microsoft realises that and in support of “the perfect shot”, it’s unveiled its next major Nokia Lumia update, called Denim, with a better Camera app among other features.
The successor to Nokia Cyan will have a better and faster Camera app, basically upgrading the current app’s laggy load time and boosting its transition time from shot to shot.
There’s also a new shortcut to activate the camera while your smartphone is asleep – a tap and hold on the camera shutter will fire it up and take a picture, while a tap and hold again starts recording a 4K video at 24fps.
Plus, it includes a new Rich Capture mode that takes pictures with Auto HDR and Dynamic Flash, as well as the ability to simultaneously take a picture with flash and another without.
But that’s not all that comes with this Windows Phone 8.1 update 1. The other major improvement is Cortana – you’ll be able to launch it from any point of the interface or when it is idle by saying “Hey Cortana”. Just make sure you don’t confuse it with “Okay Google”. It's worth taking note that it will now be made available to the US first, and to the UK and China as a Beta version. India, Australia and Canada will have it as a public Alpha.
The Lumia Denim update will be rolled out to all WP 8.1 Lumia devices sometime in Q4 this year – watch out for it. It will first be available on the Lumia 930, Lumia 1520, and Lumia Icon, then extend to the rest of the compatible Lumia smartphones shortly after.
But, the Camera app will only be available on the Lumia 930, Lumia 1520, and Lumia Icon. It will also come pre-installed on the newly launched Lumia 830; however, the recently unveiled Lumia 735 will be excluded from it.
