Do good things come in small packages? Of course! Especially if you're hauling around a mammoth system camera to the ends of the earth. And having to not worry about storage is a godsend. That's exactly what the Sandisk Extreme Pro is, a godsend for photographers, video editors and basically, anyone who wants a rugged and portable ultra-fast SSD.
Portable and ultra-fast? I don't believe you!
Why not Mr Cynical? In fact, it’s more than just portable. It's pocketable and that's why the Extreme Pro is a favourable choice amongst our video and photography crew. Many of them gawking at the minuscule size of this thing, and with a rubberised back and an aluminium frame, it fits their adrenaline-filled car journalism niche perfectly!
Tell me about the speed, you nerd!
Calm down. It's fast alright but there's a catch. According to SanDisk the NVMe storage housed within this exterior can deliver up to 2000MB/s read and up to 2000MB/s write speeds on USB 3.2 Gen 2 x2 connection. So to truly use the V2 at its maximum potential, you'll need to check your hardware for the latest ports. We tested it on our MacBook Pro 15in (2018) which has a USB 3.1 Gen 2. Even without USB 3.2 Gen 2 x2, the SanDisk is fast, extremely fast! We copied 35GB of data within 30 seconds and that's just when it’s connected to a USB 3.1 Gen 2 port.
Ayo, Apple fanboy, I am on Windows!
Oh don't worry as long as your hardware can support it, the V2 can truly stretch its legs. Very few laptops and computers have the required USB port but that also makes the V2 a future-proof investment. Our review unit of the Microsoft Surface Go (2021) took 2 minutes to copy the same amount of data as our MacBook Pro. You also get two USB cables in the box. One is Type-C to Type-C and the other is Type-C to USB Type-A.
Should I get it?
If you fit the bill then definitely. We can already find our office video crew running towards it but it'll only be helpful if they upgrade their PCs too. Desktops can slot in a PCIe expansion slot whereas laptops will not be so easy to upgrade. Whatever it is, the SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable SSD V2 is capable of delivering rapid speed at wallet-crushing cost. It's a matter of upgrading now or later. 8K videos and high-resolution photographs can really benefit from the transfer speeds and you don't have to worry about keeping this drive safe. It's IP55 water and dust resistant and can handle a few nicks and bruises without harming or damaging the drive inside. The aluminium chassis also helps it cool off quickly, just make sure your wallet is hot enough to buy.
