Smartphones under ₹7000 - a myth?

Nope, they're here, at a store near you…

There comes a time in all our lives when we wish we had a back-up phone. And at such times, we realise that any phone will do, as long as it's smart. It needn't be fruity or contain the entire galaxy (yes, we're awful at hinting via wordplay), it just needs to be able to make calls, click pics and connect to the internet. And maybe take screenshots and good selfies. Umm, and look classy too. With a fingerprint scanner, if possible. All under 7000.

Are we asking for too much? Apparently not.

There's been a sudden flurry in the sub 7K category this past week (yes, week!), that promise to fulfill your basic smartphone needs, and then some more. Here they are.

1. Alcatel Pop Star | ₹6999

Alcatel's all-new Pop Star range comes in wild colours and psychedelic designs, as well as in subdued silver and gold. The curved back cover allows for a sturdy grip and the fully laminated 5in HD IPS display offers 75% less light reflection for better readability under sunlight, as well as a 160-degree wide-viewing angle.

The phone runs on Android Lollipop 5.1 and a 1.0GHz Quad Core processor. There's 1GB RAM, 8GB internal memory (expandable up to 32GB) and a 2000mAh battery. The camera? Yes, we're coming to that - 8MP rear and 5MP front.

Were you expecting any less? Joke's on you, buddy!

2. Intex Aqua Secure | ₹6499

FINGERPRINT SCANNER, YAY. And it's under 7K! And, wait, 4G too. The rest of the world can go home now. If you're still reading, then here's what else this 4.5in FWVGA display, dual-SIM smartphone's got: a 1GB RAM and 1GHz Quad Core Mediatek processor, along with Android Lollipop 5.1, a 1900mAh Li-ion battery with support for USB Type-C charging and VoLTE. What's VoLTE? The Voice Over LTE network feature, which enables high-quality HD voice calls.

There's a 5MP/2MP camera setup, an in-built 8GB ROM with an expandable memory of up to 32GB to store pics on, and a HotKnot feature to share those pictures by simply getting the Aqua Secure screen closer to the other smartphone. (Did you really read past the line about the fingerprint scanner?)

3. Lava A79 | ₹5699

The Lava A79's  calling card? A 5.5in screen with Video PIP, Smart Music and smart screen gestures. Yes, gestures. We know how much fun that is. It is powered by a 1.2GHz Quad Core processor with 1GB RAM, coupled with 8GB ROM (expandable up to 32GB), a 5MP/2MP camera setup along with HD video recording and Digital Zoom with HDR and Photo Timer Grid. The 3G-enabled, dual-SIM smartphone runs on Android Lollipop 5.1.

The ‘Smart Screenshot’ feature transforms pages from WhatsApp chats, Facebook and browsers into a single image, making group stalking more convenient, we're sure. There's a 2200mAh Li-ion battery on board to keep the good times rolling.

4. Micromax Bolt Selfie | ₹4999

Rah-rah-Rasputin, this one's for the selfie queen (or king). With a 5MP camera for the rear as well as the front, and enhanced photo features such as Face and Beauty Mode and Gesture Capture, you can't really go wrong with those clicks. With a 4.5in screen, the Bolt Selfie is the perfect size to hold and use with one hand when you're clicking your pics.

The 4G-enabled smartie is also packed with a 1GHz Quad Core processor and 1GB RAM and 8GB ROM, expandable to 32GB, and runs on Android Lollipop 5.1.

5. iTel Wish It1508 | ₹3899

Okay, what would you get for 3899? A bonafide smartphone? The answer is yes. The Wish It1508 is enabled with 3G connectivity and pre-installed with Android 5.1.
