Binge Guide: 10 things to watch on OTT platforms this weekend

Our pick of the best that the streaming services have to offer. [Aug 13 2021]

It’s the Independence Day weekend, and unsurprisingly, our binge guide has a patriotic flavour to it.

There is plenty of new content, and we don’t want you to waste a second wondering where to start or what to watch. So here’s a handy guide on the best new shows or movies to catch up this weekend across popular OTT streaming platforms.

Disney+ Hotstar

Bhuj: The Pride of India

We kick off our list with Bhuj: The Pride of India, based on Pakistan’s attack on the Bhuj air base during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Starring the likes of Ajay Devgn, Sanjay Dutt and Sonakshi Sinha, the story is about IAF’s Vijay Karnik and his heroics when he rebuilt the air base with the help of 300 local women. The movie premieres later today.

Netrikann

If you’re into psychological thrillers, then you shouldn’t miss Netrikann, which premieres today. Directed by Milind Rau, it stars Nayanthara as a blind woman who becomes a witness to a crime. The edge-of-the-seat thriller takes a few twists and turns with a serial killer on the loose.

Amazon Prime Video

Shershaah

Continuing with the patriotic theme is Sidharth Malhotra-starrer Shershaah. The movie is based on the life of Kargil martyr Captain Vikram Batra, and is a tribute to his indomitable courage. The movie is currently available on the OTT platform.

Godzilla vs Kong

In an ideal world, we would have watched a movie of this magnitude in theatres to get the best experience. Nonetheless, the 2021 sci-fi action flick is releasing on Prime on August 14, and you should get the popcorn tub out of the closet. It is a pretty straight-forward storyline involving King Kong fighting Godzilla, and humans trying to save their planet by subduing the king of the monsters.

Modern Love Season 2

A collection of stories about love and relationships involving Kit Harington will make this top-of-the-list for many. Modern Love is back for season 2, and the premise remains the same – a collection of stories inspired by essays from the New York Times’ column Modern Love.

Apple TV+

CODA

CODA, or child of deaf adults, is a heart-touching story of 17-year-old Ruby who is the sole hearing member of a deaf family. Apart from being the interpreter for her family, she also takes care of the family business. But her life changes when she discovers her singing talent, and gets an admission into a prestigious music school. The film stars Emilia Jones, Amy Forsyth and Kevin Chapman.

Netflix

Beckett

A movie starring John David Washington is just what you need for this weekend. Beckett is a story of an American tourist in Greece who becomes a target after an accident, and is forced to run for his life, and reach the American embassy to clear his name.

The Kingdom (El Reino)

This Spanish show is for those who enjoy political dramas. The story is about a controversial religious leader who suddenly finds himself as the leading candidate in Argentina's presidential candidate after the assassination of his running mate. The presidential race in the backdrop of a murder investigation is just what we need after a hectic week at work. Season 1 of El Reino premieres today.

SonyLIV

Shanti Kranti

We may be stuck at home, but that doesn’t mean we can’t watch a story about a road trip and reminiscence of old times. This Marathi original show is about three friends on a journey of self-discovery, and everything that takes place in between. It stars popular Marathi actors Abhay Mahajan, Alok Rajwade, and Lalit Prabhakar, and is directed by Sarang Sathaye and Paula McGlynn.

ZEE5

India Shayari Project

Bigg Boss can be a bit too OTT for everyone’s liking. But here’s an upcoming reality show that promises to be real, and more importantly family friendly. India Shayari Project brings together stalwarts like Zakir Khan, Kausar Munir, and Dr. Kumar Vishwas as they share their views on freedom through poetry and shayari.
