Huawei and OPPO are currently going toe-to-toe in the smartphone periscope camera trend this year with the Huawei P30 and OPPO Reno 10X - both equipped with their own optical zoom tech. Not wanting to be left out of the fun, Samsung Electro-Mechanics had developed their own 5X optical zoom camera module for smartphones and has recently begun its mass production, according to South Korean news portal Etnews.
Like the P30 and Reno 10X, the periscope camera module is compact and takes minimal space in a smartphone's housing. However, unlike its rivals, Samsung's 5X periscope tech features a light refracting prism with a rectangular lens instead of a circular one found in most smartphones.
To showcase its capabilities, Samsung provided sample photos demonstrating the camera's modes in normal, 2X zoom, and 5X zoom. According to rumours, we could be expecting the 5X periscope camera featured in the upcoming Galaxy Note 10 later this year.
