Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini specs leak

With metronome predictability, Samsung is following up the launch of its Galaxy S5 flagship with a smaller Galaxy S5 Mini handset. Now SamMobile has spilled the beans on the Mini's specs, and… they're not terrible.

Yes, it looks like Samsung is following in Sony's footsteps and actually making the miniature version of its flagship a decent phone in its own right. The S5 Mini will reportedly pack a 4.5in 720p Super AMOLED display, an 8MP camera, Snapdragon processor, 1.5GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and a 2100mAh battery, and will run Android 4.4 KitKat at launch.

Other features include an IR blaster and IP67 water resistance, so you won't have to worry about leaks. Unlike Samsung.

Etch-a-Sketch hacked to control laser

File under "Just because they could" – the chaps at Just Add Sharks have expressed their love of lasers and vintage toys by creating a laser cutter that's controlled by an Etch A Sketch.

Okay, they haven't used a real Etch A Sketch – it's an Arduino-powered handset that uses the distinctive twin-dial control setup from the infamous toy. All the fun of doodling on an Etch A Sketch without the ability to shake it and dispose of your drawing!

Reversible USB cable plugging in this summer

USB Type-C
USB Type-C

Praise be – never again will we have to fumble about trying to plug USB cables into disobliging sockets. The USB Type-C plug will be symmetrical, and therefore reversible.

A pair of artist's renderings of the cable and its port have been released – and not surprisingly, they look quite similar to Apple's reversible Lightning cable. The USB Type-C connector will support USB 3.1, delivering bandwidith up to 10Gbps.
