Google's been cagey about the exact release date for the next Android Wear update.
Still, it seems that February will be the month Google finally releases the update, which means that current models will get better functionality and manufacturers will have reason to start making new Android Wear watches.
Standalone watches, ahoy
Developers have received notifications from Google on the impending release of Android Wear 2.0. Unsupported apps will need to be updated, else they might just end up being removed from the Play Store.
A big feature of the update is that the apps will now be able to run in standalone mode, without needing to be connected to a smartphone for connecting to WiFi or installing apps.
Google delayed releasing the update until 2017, thanks to issues that appeared in developer builds. This delay unfortunately led to manufacturers such as Motorola holding out on shipping new Android Wear watches. With the update, we might soon see new Android Wear watches appearing soon.
Check out this list of the current Android Wear watches that will receive the update once it drops. Let's see if the update gets more people keen on Android Wear and if you're in the market for a smartwatch, here's our picks for Android.
