You can do all kinds of handy things in Spotlight. You can check the currency exchange rate, do basic calculations, look up word definitions. But if you’re still mousing over to the magnifying glass in the corner of the screen, then you’re doing it wrong.

If you use multiple languages, you might be using this shortcut to switch keyboard setups. In which case, you’ll have to re-assign Spotlight Search to another shortcut.
