6 cheapest VR headsets from RM15

Enter the Matrix and find out what the fuss is all about, without breaking the bank

Let’s face it, virtual reality (VR) is going to be a big part of our future.

It may be in its infancy now, but it’s worth a taste. VR headsets and appliances can be extremely expensive, and not all of them justify the price. For those still new or unsure, it’s probably wise to try something a little cheaper, even if it doesn’t showcase the very best of VR.

As this is a list for the cheapest VR headsets, don’t expect too many dedicated VR headsets like the higher-end Oculus Rift or HTC Vive – that’s a list for another day. We’re talking about the cheapest and most painless way of getting into the VR scene, be it using your trusty smartphone or from your PC.

Google Cardboard (RM15)

The Google Cardboard and its eye-catching variants are the perfect introduction to VR. They’re extremely low-priced, give you a good feel of what VR is capable of and what it entails in the future. It could even provide a decent distraction for your kids (and annoying nephews) who don’t demand a top-notch VR experience, but just want some simple immersive fun.

It’s super simple. Build your headset, load your VR apps, slot your smartphone in front of the plastic lens and you are good to go.

If you’re unsure about VR and want to know what the fuss is about, this is a painless and fun way to begin.

VR Box 3D Virtual Reality Glasses (RM25)

It’s deals like these were you ask yourself, “why not?”

You’ve probably seen these at box shops and capsule stores, and you can get them even cheaper online. For a ridiculously low-price, it even comes paired with a Bluetooth controller to play games with.

Compromises are undoubtedly being made when it comes to quality and overall performance, but at S$15, what’s there to lose?

Samsung Gear VR (RM499)

It’s well-built and sturdy and powered by Oculus, so you know it’s got pedigree. It even has a touchpad and buttons on the side which make navigation very simple, not to mention a dedicated controller.

While it’s built for selected Samsung devices, it’s an affordable companion to any flagship Samsung device which plenty of people own. You won’t find yourself short of options either as the Oculus store is loaded with content. Take your pick among the slew of games, videos and other mesmerising experiences.

If you own a compatible Sammy device, we see no reason not to pick one up.

The Samsung Gear VR is available at all major retailers and Samsung stores, or online here.
