While tons of new games flood the app stores each week, nothing really warms our hearts quite like the classics we used to rush home (or to the arcade) to play after school.
And if like us, you think it’d be awesome to relive some of the gaming magic from back in the day, here are some old school favourites that have been officially released for your smartphone, so you can carry around a bit of nostalgia in your pocket everywhere you go. You’re welcome.
Everyone who owned a Nokia phone back in the day (meaning pretty much everyone) would have been at some point hopelessly hooked on this gem from the 90s, whilst trying to beat their own high scores.
Simple in mechanics yet so stupidly addictive, it’s hard to believe that once upon a time, society didn’t need epic 4K graphics or a gripping origin story to fall in love with a game. And if you miss those halcyon days of yore, the 1997 classic lives on today in the form of a simulator for your smartphone — complete with your choice of Nokia phone background.
Metal Slug 3
Who else here spent too much of their school allowance feeding the Metal Slug machines back when arcades were still a thing? The 2D side-scrolling shooter that lets you clear wave after wave of monsters with cool weapon upgrades and power-ups is back, except instead of a joystick, you’ll be using your thumbs to play.
You’ll be able to find mobile versions of many of the Metal Slug games in the series, but of the original arcade shooters, Metal Slug 3 gets our vote for maintaining the spirit of the earlier games from a decade ago, while introducing a bit of extra depth.
