From downright crazy to oh wow! The ongoing pandemic has given rise to a host of new technologies and gadgets, which would otherwise have never seen the light of the day.
One such tech is a COVID detector that is said to sniff out coronavirus. Yes, really! This device is being developed by British biotech company RoboScientific alongwith Durham University, and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).
The device, called 307b VOC, is fitted with 12 organic semiconducting (OSC) sensors that can smell the virus with 98-100% accuracy, even on asymptomatic patients. It works on the principle that every disease has a distinct smell associated with them. During research, the scientists came across this smell, and this device is designed to detect it.
The company is working on two models — handheld and ceiling-mounted. The latter can be used in crowded rooms like an airplane, classroom or a theater to quickly detect the virus. The COVID sniffer is still under development, but we hope it makes it to the commercial stage soon.
