DATAWIND UBISLATE (from ₹2999)
Have you ever had the pleasure of spending seven hours at work, wondering what those little demons are up to at home? Chances are those spawning sweet cherubs scream blue murder and hitting each other rather than hugging and quietly working on their homework...
Datawind’s got the right idea with this 4G educational tablet and their Flipped classroom app, Ubiclass has got the basics covered for your toddlers.
The fact that it’s dirt cheap works to its advantage – it gets the job done, keeps the kids engrossed and educated, and at this price, you can even buy one for each child!
The screen isn’t great but whatever takes care of the sound of incessant screaming, we say, bring it on! Thanks to their tie-up with Reliance, one year free internet browsing is included on their browser.
WAYKONA CHILD TRACKER (₹5999)
One of the biggest parenting challenges is to ensure you don’t leave your child behind – whether you’re engrossed in an out-of-the-world deal on a MacBook or the child decides to meander in a mall. We’re not calling you irresponsible parents, but since we have access to such technology, we must put it to use.
This watch-cum-tracking device works with a SIM that keeps track of your kid’s whereabouts, whether s/he is in school or having a showdown in the building garden.
PORTRONICS TRING: A SMART KEY-FINDER (₹999)
A tracker that also functions as a remote photo snapper – the good guys at Portronics finally thought of it. Inventions like these sure come in handy once you have kids.
This multi-purpose device offers a two-way anti-loss function, a key-finder function and a remote-camera shutter function to keep you snap – happy around the kids.
Pair it with your smartphone using the “Tring Track” app, and then attach it to that wallet or those keys you keep leaving behind while juggling with the hordes of bags you carry around with the kids. Now, if your Tring-ed object and your smartphone are separated by more than 10 metres, they will both start buzzing. (Of course, this will only work if you’ve not left behind your smartphone as well. Easy on those drinks, daddy. We know its stressful, but keep the faith!)
The remote-camera shutter function allows it to act as a 10-metre long virtual selfie stick. Press the button on the Tracker and the paired phone will start taking pictures.
The app also stores the “last location” on a map after it is disconnected from the Tring Tracker.
WITS INTERACTIVE: VIDEOBOOK & TREASURE BOX (₹1500)
Listen up parents! Kids today want technology in all aspects of life and we gotta give it to them. And let’s admit it, if animated videobooks and treasure boxes such as Ben & Bella were around while you were growing up, you’d have been far happier too.
It’s simple and astonishingly good fun as kids take an Augmented Reality-induced tour in an interactive learning ecosystem. There are also flashcards and activity books included as part of the kit to ensure the smartphone generation doesn’t lose contact with the physical world.
Again, this isn’t robotics-level tech, but kids of an impressionable age don’t need more than a delightful set of equipment to keep them occupied constructively.
It is, after all better use of the smartphone that most kids are inseparable from.
