A high-speed masking device blocks off elements of the image that aren&#39;t at the current focal depth, and then refocuses the light at 12 different depth levels. What does that mean? It seems that the new Mac Mini has a replaceable hard drive, at least, although it might void the warranty.</p> <p>[Source:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2014/10/17/mac-mini-soldered-ram/">Macrumors</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/6-things-you-need-know-todays-apple-launch/news">6 things we learnt at today&rsquo;s Apple launch</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="486" title="Apple Mac Mini" alt="Apple Mac Mini" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-macmini-2014.png?1413847241" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/fully-charged-microsoft-s-rumoured-fitness-band-out-soon-fitbit-has-smartwatch-and-custom-ps4-#comments Apple Fitbit Health and fitness Mac Mini 2014 PlayStation 4 Smartwatches Wearable tech Mon, 20 Oct 2014 14:02:00 +0000 Tein Hee Seow 1450936 at http://www.stuff.tv .klatz is a stylish smartwatch that doubles up as a smartphone http://www.stuff.tv/my/smartwatch/klatz-stylish-smartwatch-doubles-smartphone/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> There’ll be no more bag or pocket fishing for your handset </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="567" height="425" title=".klatz is a smartwatch that doubles up as a smartphone" alt=".klatz is a smartwatch that doubles up as a smartphone" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/20141015033815-handset.jpg?1413799155" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>We&rsquo;ve all been in a situation where our smartphone&rsquo;s going off the hook and we&rsquo;re rummaging through our bags (or deep pockets) trying to fish it out and get the call before it buzzes out.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/my/users/hafizahosman" title="View user profile.">Hafizah Osman</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> All about the features </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The device syncs with Android and iOS for now, and its makers say there&rsquo;s a possibility for it to get extended to Windows Phones in the future as well. But the important thing is planning from the beginning to actually pull things to a conclusion; you&#39;re not just trying to stay in the middle forever, which I think is a dangerous place to be.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/92rYjlxqypM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>I can imagine playing Ingress completely through a smartwatch </strong><br />I could be going for a walk, hands-free, eyes-free, completely taking in my environment, talking to the people around me, and tapping my watch every now and then, reading or listening through an earpiece &ndash; getting the historical background to my environment whispered in my ear. And doing it an a way that&#39;s a lot less disruptive than the phone is today.</p> <p>So I think wearables are the answer to that; it&#39;s just finding the right ones, and having them work in the right way, at the right price point, with the right fashion factor.</p> <p><strong>Wearable tech shouldn&#39;t mimic existing form factors</strong><br />I think a watch in some ways has fewer barriers than Google Glass. And I love the watch form factor for wearables, I don&#39;t want to knock it. But with every step forward, you don&#39;t want to be constrained by what&#39;s existed previously. You can make an automobile look like a horse and buggy because people are more comfortable with it, but it might not be optimal for an automobile.</p> <p>A certain amount of that might be helpful in the early adoption phases, but ultimately we will want these technologies, wherever they are on your body, to be totally optimised based on the job they&#39;re doing, not on what is more socially acceptable at that first moment of creation, just because it reminds people of something they&#39;ve seen in the past. So some people live in this dark, Gothic world, and others live in this bright, shiny rainbow world. People play games, some people stylise their surroundings to help their mood, there are different ways that people use it. You&#39;ve got two years of experience of people tying those forms together, with games, movies, books and social media &ndash; which is brand new.</p> <p>I think it&#39;s absolutely the future of storytelling and entertainment, though. It&#39;s as natural as the evolution from book to movie to television. Not that those other things can&#39;t still exist, in the same way that books and radio still exist &ndash; but it&#39;s just a much more open-ended, flexible, immersive, deeper, longer-lasting way of telling a story. At least for certain types of fantasy, science fiction, those things where you really want to create alternative worlds, that really should be the primary form, not a secondary thing. You start with a giant palette, creating the universe, and then start firing off different narratives and experiences within that. But while it doesn&#39;t share the pristine, minimal look of the 360, it&#39;s not unattractive.</p> <p>There&#39;s an outer dial which displays the minutes, a crown on the side which doubles as an on/off button and also accesses the settings menu, and a fairly big bezel. In other words it looks like a modern diving watch rather than a smartwatch.</p> <p>In the hands, the G Watch R looks and feels like, well, a watch. The G Watch R plays nice with any standard 22mm watch strap too, letting you switch up your style whenever you fancy.</p> <p>LG was keen to point out that a combination of different straps and screens can be used for different scenarios. For instance, you could slap on a rubber strap before a hike, then use the G Watch R&#39;s hiking watch face, which shows off elevation, steps taken and a compass. There are other such examples, and obviously you can mix and match as you see fit.</p> <p>Sadly, the unit we spent time with was in demo mode, so we were only able to test out the classic watch face.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Mmmm, leather" alt="LG G Watch R hands-on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN9988_3.JPG?1413895274" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The rear of the device houses a heart-rate sensor for fitness and activity tracking, along with metal charging pins which are required to charge the watch using a separate cradle.</p> <p>Unlike the Moto 360 there&#39;s no wireless charging option, which LG told us was due to design constraints. The G Watch R is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 innards, 512MB RAM and 4GB of onboard storage and appears to handle Android Wear with ease. That said, you&#39;ll have to wait for our full review unit for a final verdict.</p> <p>GPS is a notable absentee here - a shame, as its inclusion would&#39;ve meant you could track your runs without needing a smartphone. LG told us this was due to battery constraints, which we suppose is fair enough (we were told that the G Watch R won&#39;t last more than two days as it is), but again, we&#39;re keeping our fingers crossed for GPS functionality in future iterations.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/google/android-wear/review" target="_blank">Android Wear review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Handy info at a glance" alt="LG G Watch R hands-on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN9993_1.JPG?1413895274" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Message notifications" alt="LG G Watch R hands-on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN9982_0.JPG?1413895274" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Initial Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The G Watch R is easily one of the best looking Android smartwatches we&#39;ve seen, although overall we still prefer the minimalist design of the Moto 360.</p> <p>Still, we applaud LG for designing a watch first, smart device second, which is exactly the order in which things should be done, given how important build and appearance are for wearable devices.</p> <p>Its crisp, bright circular screen impressed us during the time we spent with it, and the customisation options offered by the different watch faces and straps give it reasonable flexibility.
