There&#39;s the 10.1-inch tablet bit and the base bit it plugs into.</p> <p>Acer has done its best to make fitting the two together easy. There are no release buttons, no complicated click-and-lock mechanisms. Instead everything is done with magnets, and a couple of plastic guides. It&#39;s a neat idea, but isn&#39;t perfect in practice.</p> <p>First, let&#39;s start with the good stuff. The magnets are easily powerful enough to keep the Acer Switch 10&#39;s screen firmly attached to the base. The keyboard doesn&#39;t go flying off even if you lift the whole thing up by its screen and give it a wiggle &ndash; nice work Acer, nice work magnetism.</p> <p>Using magnets also means you can put the screen on back-to-front with no issues. You might ask: why on earth would &nbsp;you want to do that? It&#39;s all part of Acer&#39;s 4-in-1 design for the Switch 10.</p> <p>As the screen doesn&#39;t fold all the way back like the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/android/lenovo-yoga-tablet-10-review/review" target="_blank">Lenovo Yoga</a>, putting the screen on backwards turns the keyboard into a neat screen stand if you want to just browse the web or watch a movie, rather than type. And if space is super-tight (basically if you&#39;re on a plane or train), you can setup the Acer Switch 10 in its tent form &ndash; again, perfect for movies.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/android/lenovo-yoga-tablet-10-review/review" target="_blank">Lenovo Yoga Tablet 10 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="Magnets and plastic guides are all the Acer uses to connect its tablet and keyboard sections" alt="Acer Switch 10 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/switch-10-keyb-s.jpg?1409702581" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1600" height="900" title="It doesn&#039;t fold backwards enough to be flat, but this configuration is great for movie watching in tight spaces" alt="Acer Switch 10 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/switch-10-5.jpg?1409702581" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A matter of balance </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Acer gets a brownie point for flexibility, then, but what&#39;s wrong? We found that even after using the Switch 10 for a while it&#39;s still all-too easy to mis-align the tablet with the base. The inconvenience issue is one half of our beef, the other side that we are a teeny-tiny bit worried about the longevity of the thing.</p> <p>The entire outside of the Acer Switch 10&#39;s hinge is plastic, including the guides that slot into the tablet part, where its arch rival&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/asus/asus-transformer-book-t100/review" target="_blank">Asus Transformer Pad T100</a>&nbsp;uses metal. Dodgy metal can shear off quicker than plastic might wear, but the Asus&#39;s hardier feel gives us that little bit more confidence in use.</p> <p>Our top tip &ndash; treat the Acer Switch 10 as if you&#39;re on a first date with it, at least until you&#39;re better acquainted.</p> <p>It is high-maintenance in another respect, too. As Acer has valued keeping the Switch 10 super-light, there&#39;s no extra ballast in the keyboard base to stop it tipping over when the screen is tilted back laptop-style.</p> <p>On a flat surface such as a table it&#39;s fine as long as you don&#39;t give the Acer Switch 10&#39;s screen a poke, but it&#39;s a right old pain should you try and work with the tablet on your knees. It&#39;ll fall back like a toddler learning to walk as soon as you take your hands of it.</p> <p>Where you benefit is weight. While loads heavier than a light tablet, as the Acer Switch 10 weighs just 1.11kg all-in it&#39;s very light for a laptop. That&#39;s just a few grammes heavier than the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/apple-macbook-air-11in-2014/review" target="_blank">11-inch MacBook Air</a>, which is oh-so famed for its portability. Asus T100 is just as light, though, and that isn&#39;t so tip-happy.</p> <p>Look a bit closer and it&#39;s pretty clear why the Acer Switch 10 is a lot cheaper than a MacBook Air. It&#39;s nowhere near as pretty, and is mostly plastic rather than metal. The keyboard is all-plastic, and while there&#39;s a sheet of brushed aluminium on the back of the tablet for that fancy-pants look, it&#39;s clearly not part of the structure of the thing. The sides, the frame &ndash; they&#39;re all plastic.</p> <p>We don&#39;t really mind, though. Plastic can do the job just fine if it&#39;s part of a well-designed device.</p> <p>The Acer Switch 10 feels pretty well-made for a cheap hybrid, but we do wish the tablet wasn&#39;t quite so angular. Like previous Acer Windows tablets, it has very boxy sides that don&#39;t even have the tiniest bit of bevelling.</p> <p>No, your poor paws aren&#39;t going to be hurt by those sharp plastic edges. But the Switch 10 could feel a whole lot nicer as a tablet. We&#39;d go as far as to say the tablet doesn&#39;t really make a lot of sense on its own.</p> <p>Just look at the thing &ndash; those giant two-tone bezels make it look like a prop from a 70s sci-fi show. It&#39;s quite strange that the Switch 10 makes a pretty attractive laptop, but a really quite ugly tablet.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/apple-macbook-air-11in-2014/review" target="_blank">MacBook Air 11in review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="Give it a little tap and the top-heavy Switch is liable to topple" alt="Acer Switch 10 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/switch-10-side-2.jpg?1409702581" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1600" height="900" title="As a standalone tablet the Acer isn&#039;t terrifically pretty" alt="Acer Switch 10 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/switch-10-11.jpg?1409702581" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Working it </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>But does the Acer Switch 10 really make a good laptop-replacer? It&#39;s actually not too bad at all.</p> <p>We tried using the Acer Switch 10 as our main work computer for a couple of days, to give it a real road test. We will admit, the keyboard takes a little bit of getting used to. It&#39;s keys are shrunk down, to perhaps about 80 per cent the size of those of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/apple-macbook-pro-retina-13in-2013/review" target="_blank">13-inch MacBook Pro</a>, but they are proper keys, sensibly-arranged, with all the usual sorts of secondary functions you&#39;d get in a full-size laptop.</p> <p>After a few days, it feels just like a miniature laptop. The key action could be improved, though. You get the same sort of key depth as an Ultrabook, but they&#39;re a little bit spongy &ndash; the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/asus/asus-transformer-book-t100/review" target="_blank">Asus Transformer Pad T100</a> keys are a bit crisper. To be fair, you will get used to it, and we were typing away at full speed within hours. But keyboard quality is pretty important in a hybrid such as the Acer Switch 10.</p> <p>Acer has tried to make the trackpad about as big as it can in a small package like this, but you can see a few of the budget cuts in it &ndash; you don&#39;t get down to less than RM1400 without a few sacrifices. The plastic surface doesn&#39;t have anywhere near as smooth a drag as the glass surface you get with good Ultrabooks, which often use textured glass, and the click action is a bit clunky.</p> <p>Things such as the slightly cramped keyboard and the just-ok trackpad just mean that the Acer Switch 10 works much better as a portable backup to a main laptop or desktop. We wouldn&#39;t recommend using it as your main laptop.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/laptops/top-ten" target="_blank">The 10 best laptops in the world right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="The Switch 10 makes a fairly compelling super-cheap laptop..." alt="Acer Switch 10 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/switch-10-19.jpg?1409702581" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1600" height="900" title="...although the keyboard and trackpad are a little less satisfying than they might be" alt="Acer Switch 10 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/switch-10-34.jpg?1409702581" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Longevity limits </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Will the Acer Switch 10 get you through a full day&#39;s work if you need it to? The Switch 10 brings much more vibrant colours, which is great for the more fun side of owning a hybrid. You don&#39;t need nice reds to work on that screenplay that&#39;s never going to get made, but for watching the movie you nicked the ideas off? Certainly.</p> <p>Specs-wise, the Acer Switch 10 display is fairly basic. It uses a 10.1-inch screen with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. It&#39;s the same sort of resolution you&#39;d see in a laptop at the price, and doesn&#39;t have that super-sharp look you can get with some under RM1400 tablets. It&#39;s certainly not Retina-grade.</p> <p>However, it&#39;s decent, and display quality is a good deal better than a cheapo laptop. As the Switch 10 uses an IPS screen, people can crowd around it to watch that video of a cat riding a robot vacuum cleaner without rubbish viewing angles ruining the (rubbish) party.</p> <p>Being a tablet at heart, the screen is a touch display. It uses a glass top layer, too, but we&#39;re pretty sure it&#39;s not Gorilla Glass as it flexes a bit too readily for our liking.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/iphone-6-s-unbreakable-sapphire-glass-screen-shown-two-videos/news" target="_blank">iPhone 6&#39;s &quot;unbreakable&quot; sapphier glass screen shown off in two videos</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="It&#039;s not a technically advanced screen on paper, but colours and viewing angles are great" alt="Acer Switch 10 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/switch-10-1.jpg?1409702581" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The muscle for full-fat Windows? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>As we look into each aspect of the Acer Switch 10, we see more of the sort of little finishing touches you miss out on compared with something perhaps 2-3 times the price. However, the real compromise is power.</p> <p>The Acer Switch 10 uses an Intel Atom Z3745 CPU and 2GB of RAM. While using full <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/microsoft/windows-81/review" target="_blank">Windows 8.1</a> rather than a cut-down RT-style version means you can have a go at installing anything you like, from <em>Peggle</em> to Adobe Premiere Pro, you&#39;re not going to want to edit videos or batch process 15MB RAW photo files on this little guy. It just doesn&rsquo;t have the power for hardcore tasks such as that.</p> <p>However, unlike some slightly earlier Atom-based Windows computers, the Switch 10 does have enough grunt to do the basics in style. There&#39;s no significant lag flicking around the interface, and while just doing simple writing and browsing, you won&#39;t be held back. It&#39;s when loading things up you&#39;ll notice those little annoying pauses. Again, it&#39;s more evidence that you probably don&#39;t want this as your no. 1 computer.</p> <p>To really push the Acer Switch 10 to its limits, we tried running a few Steam games, the most challenging being <em>Two Worlds 2</em>, a 3D RPG released way back in 2010. We needed to strip away all the fancier graphical effects and reduce the resolution to 720p (below the display resolution) to make the game playable. Even then the frame rate isn&#39;t great.</p> <p>You&#39;re not going to be playing the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/playstation-4/call-duty-advanced-warfare/review" target="_blank">latest <em>Call of Duty</em></a> on the Switch 10 then, but it&#39;ll do the trick for older games and the more simple indie titles out there, and there sure are plenty of those. You could always use it for <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/steam-home-streaming/review" target="_blank">Steam In-Home Streaming</a>, too.</p> <p>The Switch 10 is a bit more powerful than the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/asus/asus-transformer-book-t100/review" target="_blank">Transformer T100</a>, using a Z3745 chipset to the Asus&#39;s Z3740. They&#39;re pretty similar, but the Acer&#39;s processor has a bit more graphics power. This added to the better screen makes the Switch 10 a slightly better gaming hybrid &ndash; don&#39;t go trading in your PS4, though.</p> <p>Acer has tried to further jazz-up the Switch 10&#39;s entertainment cred with front-firing stereo speakers &ndash; under the display &ndash; but it hasn&#39;t entirely worked. Any kind of stereo is welcome, but the sound quality is more-or-less the norm for a tablet: zero bass, and fairly boxy sound. For games and movies, you&#39;ll want headphones.</p> <p>The 32GB standard version of the Switch 10 only leaves you with about 11GB of storage to play with anyway.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/steam-home-streaming/review" target="_blank">Steam In-Home Streaming review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="It&#039;s marginally more powerful than the Asus Transformer Book T100" alt="Acer Switch 10 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/switch-10-7.jpg?1409702581" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Acer Switch 10 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Operating System</strong> - <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/windows-81/review" target="_blank">Windows 8.1</a></p> <p><strong>Screen</strong> - 10.1in IPS LCD with 1366 x 768 resolution</p> <p><strong>CPU</strong> - Intel Atom Z3745</p> <p><strong>GPU</strong> - Integrated graphics</p> <p><strong>RAM</strong> - 2GB</p> <p><strong>Storage</strong> - 32GB or 64GB</p> <p><strong>Optical drive</strong> - None</p> <p><strong>Connectivity</strong> - 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 3.0, microSD, microHDMI</p> <p><strong>Dimensions</strong> - 177 x 262 x 8.9mm</p> <p><strong>Weight</strong> - 1.1kg</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Levelling up </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>While the Acer Switch 10 works perfectly well on its own, there are lots of ways to supercharge its powers. There&#39;s no cable in the box for this, but you can pick them up online for a couple of quid.</p> <p>What really levels-up the Switch 10&#39;s potential as a little laptop is the full-size USB port on the keyboard base. But only because&nbsp;the changes they bring from the first and second generation Surface are so obvious that you wonder why they didn&rsquo;t happen earlier (don&#39;t worry if you own an earlier Surface - we&#39;re sure Microsoft has a letter of apology in the post...).</p> <p>In place of the two-stage kickstand debuted by the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/microsoft/microsoft-surface-2/review" target="_blank">Surface 2</a>, the support now bends almost all the way back, using a brand new hinge design.</p> <p>The Type Cover keyboard, meanwhile, can now be latched at its upper edge magnetically to the bottom of the SP3&#39;s screen, creating a rigid platform in place of the wobbly board that haunted previous Surfaces.</p> <p>Those two changes transform the Surface into a good laptop that will work almost everywhere. With the kickstand bent back to 120-130 degrees and the keyboard attached, it works as well as any conventional laptop if you spend your life with your legs crossed on the sofa.</p> <p>Tilt the kickstand back further to 140-150 degrees, and it&#39;s a perfectly-angled writing surface for use on a desk if you&rsquo;re taking notes. In fact, we couldn&#39;t find a scenario where the Surface Pro 3 borked: it now works, really well.</p> <p>The kickstand, in particular, is a minor engineering marvel. It retains the first two stages from the Surface 2; pull it away from the body, and there are two distinct locking points.</p> <p>But push gently beyond the second lock point, and it will bend back to almost 150 degrees. We&rsquo;re not irresponsible enough to give any view on the hinge&rsquo;s long-term durability, but we will say that it feels beautifully made, and operates with the same well-damped smoothness after a hard month of use as it did on the day of opening the box.</p> <p>The Type Cover 3, meanwhile, is a dramatic improvement over the Type Cover 2. The keyboard&rsquo;s now spacious enough for big, clumsy fingers, and at last the trackpad is of a size and sensitivity that make it a pleasure to use. One thing, though: the keys clack if you&rsquo;re typing in anger - but even then, the cheap-ish clack doesn&rsquo;t infer shoddy build.</p> <p>The kickstand and keyboard aren&#39;t the only changes for the better. Many (including us) found text too small on the 1920 x 1080 10in screen of the Surface 2 or Pro 2. So the switch to a 12in display at a rather unusual 2160 x 1440 resolution for the SP3 is welcome, as is the shift to a 3:2 aspect ratio. Somehow, the Pro 3 just looks and feels the right size (whatever that is), while its predecessors were too small to be taken that seriously.</p> <p>The SP3&#39;s now natural to use in portrait mode (a claim you could never make for the Surface 2), making it a great (albeit large) ebook reader (which was one of Microsoft&#39;s stated intents with the 3: make it feel as much as possible like a good paper notebook).</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/apple-updates-all-macbook-pro-retina-display-models/news" target="_blank">Apple updates all Retina MacBook Pro models</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The kickstand has morphed into something that&#039;s genuinely great" alt="Microsoft Surface Pro 3 hands-on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/pro-3-slant_0.JPG?1409532279" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Microsoft Surface Pro 3 review" alt="Microsoft Surface Pro 3 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/microsoft-surface-pro-3-19_1.jpg?1409532279" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Microsoft Surface Pro 3 review" alt="Microsoft Surface Pro 3 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/microsoft-surface-pro-3-6_1.jpg?1409532279" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> PERFORMANCE: A GOOD LAPTOP, A BRILLIANT TABLET </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Surface Pro 3 will be available with a choice of Intel i3, i5 and i7 chips, 4GB, 8GB or 12GB of RAM, and 64GB, 128GB, 256GB or 512GB of SSD storage.</p> <p>Whatever combo you go for, you&#39;re buying a ridiculously powerful tablet, and a decently meaty mid-range laptop - and you can be confident that even the lowliest spec won&rsquo;t be a slouch. Our Intel i5 / 4GB / 128GB model belted through just about every task we could hurl at it - Office, browsing, email, music and movies.</p> <p>That said, let&rsquo;s be clear on one thing - the SP3&rsquo;s no gaming rig. It will happily chomp through the lighter games you&#39;ll find in the Windows Store. But with only an Intel 4400 HD graphics chip on hand to push the pixels, it&#39;ll stammer to a halt if you fire up&nbsp;<em>Crysis</em>&nbsp;at max settings (at which point, you&rsquo;ll also discover how hot the top right hand edge of the unit can get).</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/android/nvidia-shield-tablet-official-and-really-really-powerful/news" target="_blank">Nvidia Shield Tablet is official - and really, really powerful</a></strong></p> <p>Avoid giving it that kind of abuse, and the SP3 will run quiet and cool. We did find that the top right of the tablet (or top left, if you&#39;re holding it in portrait mode) is always slightly warm (we&#39;ll assume that&#39;s where the i5 is housed), but it&rsquo;s barely enough to register in normal use.</p> <p>So which spec should you go for? After a month with the 128GB i5, we wished we&#39;d chosen 8GB of RAM and the 256GB SSD.</p> <p>While 4GB of RAM will keep&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/microsoft/windows-81/review" target="_blank">Windows 8.1</a>&nbsp;running happily enough, the OS is happier with 6-8GB under the hood (and since the memory is soldered to the SP3&#39;s motherboard, you can&#39;t upgrade at a later date).</p> <p>As for wishing that we&rsquo;d gone for the 256GB hard drive, the Pro 3 has convinced us that it&rsquo;s more than a toy - it&#39;s easily flexible enough to be used day in, day out, with the result that we&rsquo;ve half filled the 128GB with our usual digital detritus.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s a well-hidden microSD slot tucked into the back of the Surface&rsquo;s casing, enabling you to add up to 128GB of extra storage.</p> <p>That&rsquo;s all very well, but as of now, you cannot install Windows Store games to an external drive - and with some of those games weighing in at over 1GB (<a href="http://apps.microsoft.com/windows/en-my/app/halo-spartan-assault/8fe2d694-baa2-4011-99c0-3a22216223bb" target="_blank"><em>Halo: Spartan Assault</em></a>&nbsp;is 1.6GB, for example), we&rsquo;d still spend the extra for the comfort of 256GB of onboard space.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="If you can stretch to it, the 8GB and 256GB SSD are worth it" alt="Microsoft Surface Pro 3 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/microsoft-surface-pro-3-15_1.jpg?1409532279" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Microsoft Surface Pro 3 Tech Specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>All specs for specific model tested.</p> <p><strong>Operating System</strong>&nbsp;-&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/microsoft/windows-81/review" target="_blank">Windows 8.1</a></p> <p><strong>Screen</strong>&nbsp;- 12in LCD with 2160 x 1440 resolution (3:2 ratio)</p> <p><strong>CPU</strong>&nbsp;- Intel Core i5 (also available with i3 or i7)</p> <p><strong>GPU</strong>&nbsp;- Intel 4400 HD</p> <p><strong>RAM</strong>&nbsp;- 8GB (also available with 4GB)</p> <p><strong>Storage</strong>&nbsp;- 128GB (also available with 64GB, 256GB or 512GB)</p> <p><strong>Optical drive</strong>&nbsp;-None</p> <p><strong>Connectivity</strong>&nbsp;- 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 3.0, microSD, Mini DisplayPort</p> <p><strong>Cameras</strong>&nbsp;- 5MP front, 5MP rear</p> <p><strong>Dimensions</strong>&nbsp;- 201 x 292 x 9mm</p> <p><strong>Weight</strong>&nbsp;- 800g</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> THE SCREEN: BEAUTIFUL ENOUGH - AND THE RIGHT RATIO, AT LAST </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Pro 3&#39;s screen is stunning. Everything&#39;s pin sharp.</p> <p>The 12in screen is also commendably natural in the way it renders colours: it&#39;s neither neutral to the point of being washed out, nor vivid in a way that&#39;ll give you a headache after an hour. It&#39;s just right.</p> <p>And Microsoft has chosen a display that will go bright enough to ensure that your Surface will stay usable even in pretty bright daylight (just as well - the screen has a glossy coating that&rsquo;s quite reflective).</p> <p>Be aware that the driver for the Surface screen will only allow two resolutions - the native 2150 x1440, and a laughably old school 1024 x 768. Couple that with&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/microsoft/windows-81/review" target="_blank">Windows 8.1&rsquo;s</a>, er, &lsquo;interesting&rsquo; approach to DPI scaling, and be prepared to tweak before everything&rsquo;s to your liking.</p> <p>You should also know that quirks in that same DPI scaling can make life with an external monitor more arduous that it should be.</p> <p>Our SP3 hooks up every day to the HDMI input of a 23in Philips 1080p desktop monitor, via the Pro 3&rsquo;s mini display port. As regular as clockwork, we lose five minutes every morning to signing out and then in again once the Philips is connected, simply to re-scale the icons on the desktop. It&#39;s intended to allow you to get sudden ideas down quickly, and that&#39;s precisely what it does. Double-tap the same purple button, and it will give you the option to lasso a section of the screen for storing away into OneNote. Smart, and genuinely useful.</p> <p>Live with the SP3 for a bit, and the combination of the pen and OneNote feel as much a part of the everyday experience as the keyboard and kickstand. And you begin to appreciate that OneNote 2013 isn&#39;t that shoddy an application. It&#39;s great for taking and organising just about anything you throw at it, and the keyword search works a treat.</p> <p>OneNote&#39;s only hitch, in our humble opinion, is its tight integration with Outlook 2013 for task management. If Microsoft really wants to own the productivity game (and it does), it needs a task manager that can sync to the cloud and every other mobile platform.</p> <p>If you&#39;re still a desktop Outlook addict (there are some still out there&hellip; right?), you&#39;ll adore OneNote. But if you spend your days in one of the thousands of&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/google/android" target="_blank">Android</a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/ios-7" target="_blank">iOS</a>&nbsp;task managers, you&#39;ll find OneNote a bind. There are Microsoft-made OneNote apps for Android and iOS, sure, but they&#39;re no match for their Evernote equivalents.</p> <p>Out of the box, your Surface Pro 3 will come with a small pen holder that&#39;s meant to attach to the Type Cover. Bluntly, it doesn&#39;t work.</p> <p>After three or four days, we almost lost the pen after the tab holder detached itself without our noticing; the sticky part just isn&#39;t sticky enough to stay attached to the Type Cover, and a normal knock will send it flying.</p> <p>We&#39;ve taken to carrying the Surface pen around in a laptop case or shirt pocket. That guarantees that it will eventually go missing. Given how important the pen is to life with an SP3, Microsoft needs to come up with a more permanent, attractive solution - and fast (especially when&nbsp;<a href="http://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-my/accessories/surface-pen" target="_blank">a replacement from the Microsoft Store is RM139</a>).</p> <p>We&rsquo;d also advise that you find a reliable local stockist of AAAA batteries before you invest in an SP3; the Surface pen is powered by a single AAAA, and we chewed through the power of the battery that came in the box in about four weeks (so let&rsquo;s make that 12 batteries a year).</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/25-unbelievably-good-and-free-windows-phone-games/feature" target="_blank">The 25 Best Free Windows Phone Games</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The combination of the pen and OneNote feel as much a part of the everyday experience as the keyboard and kickstand" alt="Microsoft Surface Pro 3 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/microsoft-surface-pro-3-5_0.jpg?1409532279" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="4000" height="3000" title="Prod the pen&#039;s purple top button once, and your Pro 3 will launch a full-screen note, regardless of whether the machine&#039;s asleep or awake" alt="Microsoft Surface Pro 3 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/microsoft-surface-pro-3-14_1.jpg?1409532279" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> BATTERY LIFE: GREAT - AS LONG AS YOU’RE US… </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Budget laptops are forgiven if they suffer from poor battery life. You know that you&rsquo;re compromising by spending the bare minimum, and most cheap 15in lappies aren&rsquo;t really built for an entire day away from a charging point.</p> <p>The Surface Pro 3 has no such excuses. Its entire appeal rests on its flexibility - one minute hammering through a PhotoShop file at your desk, the next reading a Nook book on the morning commute. For the whole concept to stack up, you mustn&rsquo;t feel nervous when taking it out for a day on the road.</p> <p>Microsoft claims up to nine hours from the Pro 3&rsquo;s lithium-ion battery &lsquo;while browsing the web&rsquo;, with careful warnings that your mileage may vary depending on your habits (and it&#39;s fair for Microsoft to hedge its bets here: a device as powerful as the Surface can indulge in some heavyweight, juice-sapping work).</p> <p>Our i5, 128GB model is good for a working day, although we confess that we&rsquo;ve yet to deliberately run it to red line.</p> <p>In one day last week, it was unplugged from charge at 7am, then pounded at a conference from 9.30am to 4pm, before taking care of email and transcription duties on the 30-minute train ride home. By the time we re-attached it to a charger at 5.30pm, it was showing 30%. We&rsquo;d call that good, by any standards.</p> <p>But then, we&rsquo;ve read enough forum posts from users suffering from disappointing SP3 battery life to feel blessed. What a forum post can&rsquo;t tell you, of course, is what use the poster is putting the Surface to. What we can say is that heavy use - particularly video streaming - has a very visible effect on the SP3&rsquo;s battery drain.</p> <p>By the way, brownie points go to Microsoft for the design of the power supply. Too many 11-13in laptops come with leads and blocks that weigh more than the thing they power - the Pro 3&rsquo;s is compact and light, and even includes a USB charging port in the power block.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="How long you get from each charge depends hugely on how you use it" alt="Microsoft Surface Pro 3 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/microsoft-surface-pro-3-18_1.jpg?1409532279" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> PROBLEMS: YEP, THERE ARE SOME </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Since its launch in the US in late June, users began reporting problems with their Pro 3s waking from sleep, staying awake and suddenly freezing. There have been several firmware releases aimed at squishing the bugs (one of which takes a nail-gnawing 15-20 minutes to install).</p> <p>But we&rsquo;ve experienced none of the sleep or wake issues (bar one freeze that forced a hard shutdown - an update shortly after appears to have fixed it).</p> <p>However, we did fall foul of one of the other commonly reported issues: flaky wireless. The latest update (July 16) claims to have sorted it for good. That claim looks to be accurate: our SP3 will now happily tether to our HTC One M8 (impossible before the update), and connect to the 2.4GHz wireless in Stuff Towers without constantly dropping.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/htc/htc-one-2/review" target="_blank">HTC One (M8) Review</a></strong></p> <p>There&rsquo;s one other SP3 problem that Microsoft cannot fix alone (although with&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/microsoft/windows-81/review" target="_blank">Windows 8.1</a>&nbsp;Update 2 coming down the tracks, they could sure as hell help).</p> <p>The high dpi screen demands that developers update their software so that it renders correctly - and as it stands today, some significant developers have yet to catch up.</p> <p>Until very recently, even Google Chrome looked awful at hi-dpi (the latest Chrome beta solves most of the issues).&nbsp;<a href="https://www.dashlane.com/" target="_blank">Dashlane</a>, a popular password manager, displays as a boil-washed version of itself. Yes. We&rsquo;d avoid the 64GB and 512GB models (you&rsquo;ll either have no space left in a week, or regret paying the high price after a month). But put a 128GB or 256GB on the counter, and we&#39;d tap in a PIN code without a moment&#39;s hesitation.</p> <p>It would be daft not to point to the fact that the Windows Store still hasn&rsquo;t reached the heights of the Play Store or iTunes, but that&#39;s an issue that&#39;s at least somewhat mitigated by the fast that Pro lets you install practically any piece of PC software on the desktop side of the two-faced OS.</p> <p>Price still has to come into it. The i5 / 128GB SP3 RM3700 asking price (with the Type Cover included) would buy an awful lot of Windows laptop, or a similarly-specced&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple-macbook-air-13in-2014/review" target="_blank">13in Macbook Air</a>&nbsp;with around RM500 change to spare.</p> <p>But the Pro 3&rsquo;s different enough to undermine absolutist comparisons: a chunk of that RM3700 is going on &lsquo;unusual&rsquo;, and we think that for many it will justify itself on that basis. And if you insist on like-for-likes, the fact is that the Pro 3 is as quick and capable as either a Lenovo Yoga Pro 2 or a Macbook Air.</p> <p>At last, there&rsquo;s a Surface that&rsquo;s right.</p> Alternatively, if your Mac&rsquo;s drive still has plenty of spare storage space, you can create a separate partition for Yosemite. </p> <p>(Note: if you have a Fusion Drive, don&rsquo;t follow this process - this is only a straightforward option if you&#39;re using a standard HDD or SDD.) </p> <p>In Disk Utility, select your drive, click Partition, and click the + button. Select the second partition and drag the separator until its size is however much you want for Yosemite - Apple says 8GB minimum, but we&rsquo;d say you need at least 20GB to test it properly. </p> <p>Once you&rsquo;re done, click Apply and your drive will be non-destructively partitioned. You can then select it during the Yosemite install, and boot to it from Startup Disk in System Preferences or by holding Option (Alt) when restarting. </p> <p>Note that when Yosemite is released this autumn, you can just delete the partition to get the space back on your Mac&rsquo;s main drive.</p> <p>See - that was easy enough. Apple has tightened up the design, with a flatter, simpler look to icons that&#39;s lifted from iOS 7; it lends the Dock a much cleaner look and makes it more instinctively navigable.</p> <p>And how about that new translucenct Trash icon? We&#39;ve not been this excited about a desktop bin since the thrills of the Oscar the Grouch utility for Mac OS 7.1.</p> <p>Translucency is actually a big theme here, and is used to&nbsp;give toolbars and sidebars a frosted glass-like effect, allowing you to see colour tones of background content through your foreground programmes. It&#39;s terrifically pretty, but the level of transparency informs you only that there&#39;s&nbsp;<em>something</em>&nbsp;behind the window you&#39;re working on, rather than what it might be.</p> <p>Prettiness for prettiness&#39; sake is fine by us, mind, and it doesn&#39;t even really matter that this sort of thing was introduced first by Microsoft way back at the launch of Vista. We only wish Apple had also seen fit to pinch the auto-sizing of windows that leads to a pleasingly regimented arrangement of, er, windows in, um, Windows.</p> <p>That hasn&#39;t happened, but Toolbars have been tidied and streamlined.&nbsp; The Close, Minimise and Maximise buttons are now Close, Minimise and Full-screen. Maximise hasn&#39;t moved elsewhere, it&#39;s been relegated to a secret (OK, not actually secret) shortcut - press Alt while you click the Full-screen button and you&#39;ll get the old-school Maximise, which means your window will fill most of the screen but leave the dock and menu bar visible.</p> <p>Apple clearly wants people to use Full-screen, swiping from app to app using their MacBook&#39;s touchpad. Honestly, that&#39;s not a usage scenario we&#39;ve managed to get used to just yet, but in a two-screen setup Full-screen works well, giving you a massive space for your most used app (in our case the web browser) while leaving your dock and an array of smaller windows available on the secondary screen.</p> <p>And finally there&#39;s the new font, which while not identical to that used in iOS 7 will feel immediately familiar to all those iPad and iPhone users out there. There are font bores in Stuff Towers (one of whom you&#39;ll be hearing from in the next couple of days) who&#39;ve taken against it in quite a big way, but to these eyes it&#39;s a rather fetching blend of fun and function, and is never less than perfectly legible.</p> <p>All-in-all the design changes are fairly subtle, which means existing Mac users will find themselves right at home in mere moments. Whether everyone will immediately take to the new icons and font is another matter, but we suspect that once those knees have stopped jerking most will agree that the cleaner look makes for a nicer overall user experience.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2100" height="900" title="Transluceny looms large in Yosemite" alt="Mac OS X Yosemite" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Apple-Yosemite-Family_1.jpg?1407987800" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="820" height="615" title="Disappointed to see that the stack of pancakes are in fact, stacked bowls" alt="Mac OS X Yosemite" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/mac-os-x-yosemite-design1_1.jpg?1407987801" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Glorious continuity </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Continuity is perhaps the biggest and most exciting new feature in OS X Yosemite. Unfortunately it only works with&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/ios-8/review" target="_blank">iOS 8</a>, which isn&#39;t yet available to test. We have seen it in action, though, so read on for all the details.</p> <p>During its launch at WWDC, Apple stressed how important it was for it to create a seamless experience between all of its iDevices and Macs, and Yosemite absolutely looks like it&#39;s set to deliver just that. And then some.</p> <p>For starters, Macs and iDevices will be able to automatically recognise when they&#39;re near each other, connecting between themselves without you having to lift a finger. And it opens up a box of very powerful tricks.</p> <p>Take phone calls for example. Imagine if you&#39;re on your iMac, doing important... iMac things, &nbsp;and your iPhone&#39;s charging away in your bedroom.&nbsp;</p> <p>All of a sudden, you get a phone call, and you&#39;re tripping over Barbie&#39;s Selfie Summerhouse in an attempt to make it to your iPhone on time. With Yosemite and&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/ios-8/review" target="_blank">iOS 8</a>, instead of crushing your little girl&#39;s dreams, you&#39;ll get a notification on your Mac desktop to tell you who&#39;s calling.</p> <p>You can choose to reject the call, or answer it and carry out the phone call directly on your Mac, while the iPhone remains in the other room. Impressive, no?</p> <p>Messages get the same treatment. You can now send and receive SMS, MMS and new audio clip messages directly from your Mac - regardless of whether or not they&#39;re being sent, or received from, an iPhone. The only exception to non-iOS devices might be audio clips, but this has yet to be confirmed.</p> <p>Another big benefit of your Mac automatically connecting with your iPhone is that you&#39;re able to use OS X Yosemite&#39;s new Instant Hotspot function.&nbsp;</p> <p>If the Wi-Fi at your local Starbucks conks out due to a mocha explosion, then all you have to do is selected your automatically connected iPhone in the Wi-Fi menu, and boom - you&#39;re hooked up to mobile data in an instant - no passwords required.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Continuity will almost certainly be Yosemite&#039;s killer feature. Expect loads of these to become available in the run-up to Yosemite&#39;s full launch.</p> <p>It logically makes sense that the Tomorrow entry would go right at the bottom of the Today panel, what with it not being something that happens today, but I&#39;d personally prefer to see it directly underneath the Calendar widget. Alas, Tomorrow can&#39;t be moved. It can&#39;t be clicked on, either, so if you want more details than a vague &quot; There are 6 events scheduled&quot; you&#39;re going to need to open the Calendar app yourself.</p> <p>And while we&#39;re on the subject of Calendar, entries in its Today widget occasionally appear with black titles, making them hard to read over the grey background. This has the feel of a simple bug, and one that will undoubtedly get a fix in short order.</p> <p>Serial Tweeter? You&#39;ll probably appreciate the Social widget of Today, which allows you to post to Linkedin, Facebook and Twitter - or send iMessages - in a snap. You can&#39;t add images, but this is perhaps the quickest way yet to spout your thoughts on to the interwebs.</p> <p>And of course the thoughts of the interwebs are spouted right back at you via the standard Notifications panel, but now if it all gets a bit much you can activate Do Not Disturb, which has endless customisation options.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1019" height="764" title="Our lives seem empty in comparison..." alt="Mac OS X Yosemite" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/os-x-yosemite-notification-centre_0.jpg?1407987801" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> In the Spotlight </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Spotlight search is accessed in the same way as before (click on the magnifying glass or hit CMD+Space), but it&#39;s now far more useful.</p> <p>It takes pride of place right in the middle of your display, and as well as more effectively searching your local documents and media (it has an unerring habit of picking exactly what you&#39;re after as the Top Hit) it also draws information from sources such as Definition, Wikipedia, Maps and Yelp. The Wikipedia integration is especially useful - no longer is IMDB the quickest way to work out which darn film it was that you last saw that blasted familiar actor in.</p> <p>Spotlight is also a fantastic way of finding little snippets of information you read on the internet days ago but that you&#39;ve no chance of finding by looking through the list of obscurely titled web pages in your History. That&#39;s because it actually searches right&nbsp;<em>through</em>&nbsp;the pages in your history.</p> <p>And when Continuity does go live the integration of Contacts should also prove supremely easy. The URL bar finally doubles-up as a search bar (with Spotlight integration), and clicking on it also opens a drop-down panel with neat rows of icons for all of your favourite and most visited sites.</p> <p>This panel, combined with scrollable tabs and a Tab View that shows you every single open tab (across all devices once iOS 8 goes live), goes some way towards making up for the fact that Pinned tabs are still not a feature of Safari. But not all of the way. Those who have a strict setup of pages that they sit on all day might want to change the default Favourites to those tabs that would be Pinned in Chrome and open them at the start of each Safari session with the Open In Tabs option in the Favourites section of Bookmarks. Or they might want to simply stick with Chrome.</p> <p>Sharing is also easier. Seen a hilarious meme that you simply have to share with your great aunt Gertrude? A few clicks is all it takes to beam it straight to her via Mail, Messages, AirDrop, Twitter, Facebook, etc. Oh how she&#39;ll chortle.</p> <p>Also, Safari has caught up with Chrome&#39;s private browsing features in the sense that you can, at long last, open up a separate Private Browsing window, in which all tabs will also be private. That means you can go all Secret Squirrel in one window, while browsing normally in another.</p> <p>Apart from a visual makeover, Safari&#39;s back end has also undergone some tweaking. Boring bar charts aside, JavaScript optimisations and Yosemite&#39;s overall energy efficiency mean that in addition to being faster than ever, you should be able to squeeze an extra two whole hours of Netflix streaming out of your MacBook Air&#39;s battery life. In fact, Dropbox might be a bit worried about this new version of iCloud.</p> <p>You can create additional folders using iCloud Drive too, which then syncs them across all of your Macs and iDevices. And iOS 8 includes the option for developers to create iCloud folders so that certain things - doodles you&#39;ve made in Sketchbook Pro, for example - will then be available across all devices.</p> <p>AirDrop is another useful feature which lets you push files between nearby iOS devices or Macs with just a few clicks, though we&#39;ve yet to test out if this method will be faster than bashing out a quick email.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1400" height="900" title="iCloud is going to be way more powerful and flexible - Dropbox should be worried" alt="Mac OS X Yosemite" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Yosemite-iCloud-2_1.jpg?1407987800" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-8"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A near-flawless performance, even in beta </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Just because Apple is launching a public beta for the first time doesn&#39;t mean it&#39;s unleashing a shoddy piece of unstable software on an unsuspecting public. Only the Notifications toolbar, which fairly regularly stumbles rather than glides into view, has given us any cause for concern, and we&#39;ve no reason to think that won&#39;t be looked at and smoothed-out long before the final release of Yosemite.</p> <p>Apart from that the performance has been lightning fast and stutter free, but in fairness we have been testing on an i7 MacBook Pro with 16GB of RAM. Our next step will be to install Yosemite on a number of other Macs to put Apple&#39;s claims of faster performance and longer battery life to the test - stay tuned for updates on that one.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/apple-macbook-pro-retina-13in-2013/review" target="_blank">Apple MacBook Pro review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Mac OS X Yosemite" alt="Mac OS X Yosemite" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/os-x-yosemite-design_1_1_1.jpg?1407987800" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-9"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Apple OS X initial verdict - should you download the beta now? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It may be &#39;only&#39; a point release, but OS X 10.10 Yosemite is actually a rather large update for Apple&#39;s Mac operating system. That depends. If you&#39;re a developer or have a penchant for seeing software develop, fill your boots. Ditto if you fancy doing some serious testing and bug reporting for Apple.</p> <p>But the average user? Perhaps not quite yet. There&#39;s no guarantee that all of those apps you rely on on a daily basis will work with the Yosemite beta, and as a beta there&#39;s always the chance it will fall over and do something horrible to your vital data. If that sounds like it would be a fate worse than death, best hold on for the full, final release.
