Google's 12 best April Fools' pranks toyed with our feelings

Every year, the big G never fails to keep us entertained on 1 April

Throwback Thursday: Google's 10 best April Fools' pranks

Didn’t catch ‘em all Pokemons on Google Maps? Can’t wait to try the Nest smart thermostat on Virgin America flights?

These are just some of the great innovations that Google have unleashed upon the world on 1 April*

Sure, they sound zany, wild, and at times almost impossible to pull it off. But we have absolute faith in the folks at Mountain View.

Just look at some of the wonderful ideas they came up with over the last few years.

*Disclaimer: as a self-professed Google fanboy, this writer has been in denial and refused to recognise these antics as April Fools’ Day pranks.

Pac-Maps (2015)

In 2015, you would have seen Pac-Man running around a street near you. Well, on Google Maps, really. What you're doing is guiding Pac-Man to gobble more pellets and avoid the touch of death by the ghastly ghosts chasing you down. Alas, the game is shortlived but you can still play Pac-Man on Google Doodle.

Google Maps: Pokémon Challenge (2014)

You can't stop until you catch 'em all. So Google kindly helped aspiring Pokémon Masters with an augmented reality game that challenges players to travel the world in search of Pokémon and catch them using their smartphones.

The challenge wasn't all fake though. For a brief period, iOS and Android users got to do a Pokémon treasure hunt on Google Maps, giving you 150 Pokémon to add to your Pokédex.
