The 10 best in-ear headphones

Looking for the best in-ear headphones? You'll find the perfect pair for every ear and budget below.

The number one accessory for a phone or tablet is not a weird case that lets you watch Netflix with the screen on your belly. It’s a decent pair of headphones. In-ears are where they’re at these days and increasingly in-ears are completely wireless (sometimes called true wireless) and come in a charging case.

After all, a good pair of wireless headphones is something you can use every single day of the year. Maybe it’s a better buy than that VR headset you might use for two weeks then leave to gather dust until it’s out of date.

There are several things you need to consider when buying a pair of in-ears – sound quality being important, but there’s also comfort and fit – how adjustable it is – as well as specification. Do they have noise cancelling? Will they work well with your devices? Is there a case and does it have wireless charging? How long is the battery life? There are numerous factors to think about but there can only be one list to be on – here’s our guide to the best wireless earphones around.

Sony WF-1000XM4

By doing pretty much everything really well, the WF-1000XM4 continue Sony’s long and proud tradition of building the best true wireless in-ear headphones you can buy. A punchy, detailed and well-balanced listen.

  • Articulate, convincing sound
  • Great call quality
  • Ergonomically impeccable

Devialet Gemini

True wireless ANC buds that have their quirks and a so-so design but offer delectable sonic refinement in an inexpensive and ultra-portable package. The sound out of the box is arguably slightly overcooked in the upper mids.

Features:

  • Stunning sound
  • Competitive price
  • Dinosaur nostrils

Bose QuietComfort Earbuds

A champ of ANC wireless earbuds, despite a large case and bulky earbud design. But the noise-cancelling doesn’t do a disservice to the esteemed QuietComfort name, it’s hugely customisable, and the buds sound great too.

Features:

  • Noise-cancelling as good as you’d expect from Bose
  • 11 levels of ANC in the app
  • Good seal
  • Bassy but balanced listen

Bowers & Wilkins PI7

Bowers & Wilkins’ debut true wireless buds are brilliant for reasons we weren’t quite expecting, but we felt slightly let down in other areas that should be sewn up for the price you’re paying. The sound quality is exceptional and possibly the best we’ve heard yet from a pair of true wireless buds, and the build quality is as you would expect from Bowers & Wilkins.

Features:

  • Exquisite sound quality
  • Clever Bluetooth charging case
  • Fantastic build quality

Bang & Olufsen Beoplay EQ

These stylish in-ears sound great, but they’re also predictably pricey. You can get better bang-for-buck elsewhere but the EQ certainly look the part, come with a fancy case, and live up to B&O’s reputation when it comes to sound. The addition of ANC makes them definitively plane-ready, too.

Features:

  • Great design and very comfortable
  • Balanced, detailed sound
  • Adaptive ANC on board

Cambridge Audio has always been an intrepid company, and with Melomania 1 it’s trying to wring full-size performance from some true wireless in-ears that aren’t much bigger than plenty of wired alternatives. And it’s trying to do so while giving Melomania 1 epic battery life.

  • Solidly made yet lightweight
  • Impressive battery life
  • Open, detailed and exciting sound
  • Sweat-proof

Apple AirPods Pro

Apple’s AirPods Pro are fantastic wireless in-ears, comfortable and incredibly intuitive making for a seamless user experience. It does feel a bit of a stretch to call them ‘Pro’ as they don’t quite match similar priced competitors for sound quality.

Features:

  • Comfortable and secure fit
  • Decent noise cancellation
