TV Gadget of the Year 2016

If Sky Q's mission statement read: ‘Make the Sonos of TV’ then it should have 'JOB DONE' stamped across it in big red letters by now. It might be pricey - when has having Sky ever been cheap? - but the shiny, swipey interface alone makes every other telly box out there look positively ancient. Got a big house/lots of eyes to entertain at once? The addition of two extra Mini boxes that use the main 2TB Silver box as a hub, plus streaming to tablets, means you barely have to go a moment without access to the latest episode of Game of Thrones. Yep, even on the throne. Throw in Ultra HD (for free, technically) and if the TV is the altar you worship at there’s really no other god.

The runners up

The latest and greatest Fire TV is super-fast, plenty powerful and comes with an excellent range of content. Plus it's one of the only ways to get 4K without forking out a fortune.

The cheapest Ultra HD Blu-ray player you can buy also doubles as a quite brilliant games console that’ll upscale your games to 4K HDR. So that's two solid reasons to treat yourself to one.

4K streams are all well and good, but for the absolute best quality you can’t beat Ultra HD off a disc. Panny’s spinner delivers detail in spades; if you’re a movie buff, this is the player for you.

Proof that you don’t have to shell out on a subscription to enjoy Sky’s excellent offerings of sport, entertainment and movies. Sky’s latest Now TV Smart Box is a great all-rounder.
