Android Wear not dead yet, Google making its own watches

Expect new watches and Android Wear 2.0 updates for existing models

Google is set to try (again) to give the Apple Watch some competition not just with an Android Wear 2.0 update but to new watches.

Android smartwatch central

The two smartwatches had been rumoured before, with one being an LTE-enabled larger watch dubbed "Angelfish", while the smaller watch was dubbed "Swordfish", without LTE.

For the redesign, Wear 2.0 will also now have Android Pay as well as other UI tweaks.

Unfortunately the update coming only next year meant there wasn't time or room for Android manufacturers to create smartwatches in time for the holiday season.

What the Android Wear 2.0 update will bring will be standalone, native apps that will not need a smartphone to function. Also set to debut is Google Assistant as well as the addition of watch face complications as well as tweaks to Material Design.

However, the following smartwatches will be updated next year, giving these models a little more longevity in the market. Newer models are expected to be shown at CES while other products are set to be launched at the Baselworld trade show in 2017.
