Apple’s iPad is like trading up from VHS to Blu-ray. With five times more pixels than an iPhone, the iPad’s 9.7in, 1024x768-pixel screen is simply superb.
Multi-touch works a dream, the colours are vivid and even that 10-hour battery life doesn’t dent its brightness.
As a web tablet you’ll discover that the iPad sees pages burst onto the screen in microseconds and that 9.7in display takes the iPhone’s pinch-and-flick navigation to a whole new level. The lack of Flash takes its toll, however, and Google search results are on the small side.
The iPad’s super-shiny, so get ready for reflections, glare and a mess of fingerprints… All the more reason to skin up quickly, before this beauty slides out of your grasp.
E-book me
Ebooks move on from monochrome, with the classy iBooks app adding colour illustrations and slick page turns. Apple’s store looks bare (and pricey) compared with Amazon’s groaning e-shelves, although the Kindle iPad app lacks iBooks’ search and dictionary look-ups. The LCD is fine indoors, but no match for e-ink in bright light.
The iPad upgrades the casual and puzzle games that looked great on the iPhone and introduces a slew of hi-def, high-speed and 3D titles, while the sensitive accelerometer also allows Wii-style shenanigans.
Not such a resounding roar when it comes to the iPad as media player: the new-look iPod app is about as exciting as a Linux menu tree, there’s no cover-art jukebox to flick through, and we experienced several audio hiccups when listening to tunes in the background. However, video downloads from iTunes are one-touch simple, HD video playback is seamless and the built-in speakers actually aren’t that bad.

Apple’s custom gigahertz chip rips through even the most demanding apps without a stutter and hi-res maps, multi-megapixel photos and crowded web pages render in an instant.
Real Racing is a superb 3D racing sim that turns the iPad into a virtual steering wheel. The graphics aren’t quite PSP standard, but gameplay is addictive, especially with power-ups, skins, tunes and online championships.
ABC Player is a smart on-demand TV app letting you browse and watch the HD episodes of ABC’s biggest series (FlashFoward, Lost) for free. If iPlayer can match this, we’re never turning our TV on – ever again.
Not all rosy with apps, though – every time the screen re-orientates from landscape to portrait, the apps shuffle position, so it can be difficult to find the one you’re looking for. Of course, the iPhone 4 OS should help that situation by adding folders.

For news and sport, the USA Today app delivers America’s lightweight daily paper into the palm of your hand. There’s a gallery of news photos, interactive polls, a good weather app and live scores for the nation’s favourite sports. The eye-popping Wall Street Journal app is also worth a look, as is Popular Science.
For stattos and fans of fine figures, Elements is a UK-produced edutainment app, which provides an interactive multimedia blast of periodic table facts and features, plus live links to Wolfram Alpha.

Okay, so the soft keyboard is too big for use with thumbs, and there are no USB ports, and while email attachments open swiftly you can’t save them or search your inbox, but…
The iPad is still totally desirable. The screen is lush and detailed, and the new full-fat iPad apps absolutely rock. Wi-Fi browsing moves at a million miles per hour; and when sat next to a rival like the Archos 9 PCtablet running Windows 7, the French competitor becomes a sputtering Virgin F1 racer to Apple’s turbocharged Ferrari.

3G is not quite the great deal as it was yesterday, AT&T is eliminating unlimited data for new accounts. In the past, the deal was you could get unlimited data for $30/month with no contract. Now you can get a $25/month deal for 2GB, which is probably more than enough if you don't watch video. Existing $30/month users might as well be on contract, because they will have to keep paying to get the original deal. There are also cheaper smaller plans. Right now I'm on the unlimited plan, and it is great. I have been Skyping to my wife in China, using Google maps, browsing the web in the dentist office and at lunch. It is very slick. I've now spent the better part of a day playing with the new iPad, and while it excels in many things there are still some things anyone considering buying one should probably keep in mind.
This thing is very fast, opening and closing applications is quick, the screen is incredibly responsive, there is no lag while typing, and the built in Safari browser does a great job of quickly loading even graphic intense pages.

It is a nice piece of kit, but like everything with Apple, they make you feel they are holding things back just so they can add it on at a later date and sting you for another buck. Would I like one? Yes! Would I pay 400+ for one just know? No! Come Christmas they'll most likely be releasing iPad3. So no matter how much I like Apple's "Stuff" I would always wait at lease a year, maybe 2, before committing myself; I just hate the disappointment of purchasing a gadget you KNOW will be updated in 6 months. (Who's still got the 1st iPhone you know, the one without blue tooth, how slack was that!)

I'm afraid I just sold my ipad...for an extremely good price as well if this is anything to go by!! I just don't need it when I've got my iphone 4 which is so much more portable and private. There's nothing worse on the train than people looking at your ipad and reading what you're up to....not that I'm 'up' to anything lol!

A great Piece of kit.. I has replaced my Macbook for most basic day to day tasks.
Biggest downside for me is the lack of the Apple Clock app that is found on the Iphone and Ipod touch. The apple app is superior to all other free clock apps on the app store...
Hopefully this will be rectified in iOS 4.3

As a new reader of your publication and a new Ipad user I am not surprised of the 5 star rating. I was a total MS fan and could not be moved until I was given an Ipad as a present and to be totally honest I am eating every bad word I have ever uttered about apple. I am also a blackberry user and am slowly being won over to the iPhone if only for the easy use of the apps. As this is the first model of the pad to be released please could users give apple the opportunity to improve on what I see as a near perfect alternative to laptops and home PC's.

I have an iPad, and love it. Yes it doesn't have flash support, but many websites are quickly enabling HTML5 video, which in my opinion, is so much more stable than flash.
The apps available are amazing, and browsing the web is the best on any device ever. I turn mu computer off, and curl up on the sofa with the iPad, browsing the web with ease. It is just amazing!

Apple has revamped the design on the iPod Touch, and introduced a sparkling new display, and added a speedy processor which apple calls it A4. Apart from that I can’t seems to compare the differences between the iPod Touch and the new iPad.

This is my first Apple thing. It's great for basic browsing, battery life is great and it doesn't heat up like a laptop but and its a HUGE but, the lack of Flash is really annoying. Who are Apple to tell me which sites I can and can't visit - defeats the purpose of the internet. I'm just glad I won it and didn't pay for it.

Im with Dave on this, I experienced my first ipad demo today and I think the word ''disappointed'' is an understatement, to begin with I had a quick flick around the different screens to check out the apps that had been installed, 60 seconds later the screen was plastered in my fingerprints and not so pretty to look at.
I then gave the ipad an opportunity to redeem itself by playing a hd movie that had been installed on it, pixelated and laggy are the only 2 non offensive words that I can use for that experience.
The apparent change in app position when the screen is tilted between portrait and landscape wasn't a massive problem as you would soon get used to both styles of app layout, particularly with the more popular apps.
Overall the ipad is an ok piece of kit if you have £500 to spare, but please dont go replacing your laptop just yet, there is plenty of fine tuning that needs to be accomplished before it can take a firm stance in the tablet market, but im sure that Apple have got a few new tweaked versions that will be released just in time for christmas.

It's truly wonderful how educated most of these responses are. On a side note (and actually reviewing...) I am not the owner of an IPad, however I had a play on my brother in law's and was blown away.
The key thing about the IPad is that everything it has set out to do, it does perfectly. The touchscreen is extremely responsive and the resolution on display is mindblowing. Sound has a good bassy feel to it and movies play at a very good quality. Picture resolution and display is phenomenal and the majority of apps look fantastic upscaled from the iphone resolution.
I am sorely tempted to buy one, only I already own a laptop that covers everything the IPod does. The opening statement from Stuff captures the feel perfectly. Debonair yet not needed!

It is a really good piece of kit, but I know for a fact apple could have made it better. Apple always have a trend of making there first product crap, like the iPhone 2G. Apple said they could have put a 3G chip in it, but they wanted to make money of the 2G before selling the 3G and making money of that. Same with the 1st generation iPod touch, they said they could of fitted a speaker, but they didn't want to for the same reason.
Anyone thinking of buying an iPad, DON'T, they are realising a new one next year that will cost the same amount and have alot more features that people have been complaining about like a camera, better speakers, and they are trying to make a deal with Adobe to get flash support on the 2nd generation iPad.

I have a four year old Tosh M400 tablet laptop. I have to say that, by comparison, my "ancient" machine ticks waaaay more boxes in its original form (three + years),
So, everything is in there, plus having a keyboard that you "type" on your lap......and the ability to "write" on screen with somethng that feels like pen and paper really makes the whole "tablet" concept real.
I am looking to replace my Tosh, I've maxxed out the ram to 2gb, but need more now and was considering ipad as a possible runner......but....don't think so
been a "Stuff" fan since the mag came out......but 5 stars...come on!!

I have been searching the net trying to make my mind up. I remember the launch of the iphone and everyone saying it was a joke, it doesn't have this that and the other.
So far just about everyone that owns one loves it, I want one for casual browsing at home and taking on trips so we have movies etc.

Well, I'm on my iPad right now, and while the lack of Flash video is mildly irritating, it's not a deal breaker.
The lack of an SD card slot on the other side of the dock connector, is frustrating though.
Also, the lack of any sign of an on-device, UK App Store thus far, sucks(for want of a better word), but that's the price I pay for getting this thing at the end of April - I have to browse and download apps on my PC and then sync, to get apps onto this thing at the moment.

I have always been an apple fan long time before the current "i" era that we are currently live in. Dave has some decent points but one cannoy deny the build quality and service offered by Apple. Compared to other brands like Creative, Diamond (which went bust if anyone rememebers!) and even sandisk , Apple are streets ahead. Surely this is reflected in the additional RRP on Apple products

I've played with one of these...and to be honest I don't see how it got 5 stars? I mean, it does what it can very well, don't get me wrong, but for an internet tablet today to not have flash support? For the screens to change how the apps or organised when the screen is rotated, audio problems and no anti glare? I'm sorry but these are standard features that I'd expect from a £500 "internet" tablet.
My HTC Desire does everything, near enough that this Ipad does, and more, for less money and it fits into my pocket, it just seems that if it has an apple logo on it, people just automtically slap 5*s onto it, regardless of how substandard the features are.

You're quite right Dave... I couldn't believe the 5 stars either.
The reviewer has clearly taken an apple fanboy pill.
To play-down the lack of flash as an mild inconvenience, to me, sums up the attitude of the reviewer.

Not strictly a user review, but how did the iPad get five stars from you guys when you have a review that has almost as many negative points as positive? I'm not arguing that it's a great machine, but with a boring looking iPod app, no flash support, average built in speakers, a glare prone, super reflective fingerprint magnet of a screen, an eye blistering e-book reader (in comparison to a dedicated eInk device), apps going walkies when you change the screen orientation, audio pops when you try to play music, no cover flow, a keyboard you can't use effectively and a big empty and pricey excuse for an e-book store how can you seriously justify giving it five stars? I've only pointed out the negatives that you guys acknowledge yourselves, and every positive you come back with can be summed up as "it looks nice." I really like Stuff as a magazine but when you're giving a product - that can't even do what it says on the tin - five stars because it's pretty then I really have to question your objectivity.
