Viral of the week – Colossus: the world’s first programmable computer
This is the story of building – from 2400 valves, no less – the world’s first programmable computer, Colossus. First operational in 1944, it automated wartime codebreaking, shaving years off World War II. Owing to secrecy policy, Colossus has taken a back seat in computing history, but this short film about the creators of the seminal machine should help bring it closer to its rightful place in history. The ultimate Retro Chic, perhaps?
