HTC could be making a premium Nexus 8 tablet for Google

Google's next mini slate could have a larger screen and a brand new premium metal body

HTC is reportedly manufacturing a new 8in Nexus 8 tablet for Google which is expected to replace the Nexus 7.

The rumours come courtesy of DigiTimes whose supply chain sources have reported that HTC will be taking over manufacturing duties from Asus.

It’s believed that Google initially approached HTC for the first generation of Nexus tablets but was turned down, presumably as HTC wanted to focus on developing its smartphone roster (and thankfully, give up on its Flyer tablet). Given the quality of the HTC One (M8), we’re glad things panned out they way that they did.

While Asus can now focus on pushing its own tablet hardware, we’re entertaining the possibility of being graced with a premium metal HTC Google tablet powered by beautiful stock Android 4.5.

While there’s nothing solid to go on at the moment, rumoured specs suggest that the Nexus 8 could have an Intel Bay Trail-T processor and a pixel-packed 8in 2560 x 1600 screen.

Google I/O is set to kick off at the end of June, so thankfully we haven’t got too long to wait for all the details to be revealed.
