The OnePlus 2 will be unveiled next month – with a VR stream

Never settle... unless you're sitting to watch the reveal event via Cardboard

OnePlus has ramped up its marketing machine with teases for its new smartphone, the successor to last year’s excellent OnePlus One, and we finally know when we’ll get a good look at the next handset – and how, which is an important detail in this instance.

The company has pegged 27 July at 7pm Pacific Time (that’s 28 July at 3am UK time, sadly) as the official launch date for the OnePlus 2, as the previous date of 1 June came and went, but it won’t be shown via a standard press conference stream or product website launch. No, the phone will be unveiled exclusively in virtual reality, allowing viewers to see the handset up close.

Indeed, OnePlus will stream its event via VR using Google Cardboard, although it’s not yet known if it will be viewable on both Android and iPhone devices (as the latest Cardboard revision now officially supports the latter). OnePlus has even designed its own, more compact version of the Cardboard 2.0 viewer, which will be available soon via its website – you’ll just pay for shipping.

The OnePlus 2 will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 processor, but this isn’t the same one that’s been prone to overheating in other devices – the companies worked together on a "2.1 version" that runs cooler and doesn’t strain the battery. The new phone will also have a USB Type-C port, helping to lead the way for that relatively young standard.

Otherwise, we’ve heard that the device will have the same 5.5in 1080p display as last year’s, along with 3MP RAM and other likely improvements. The OnePlus One came out of nowhere to become one of our favorite phones of last year, and an absolute steal compared to typical flagships, so we’ll be keeping a close eye (well, eyes) on next month’s VR reveal.
