GoPro will release its Karma drone in 2016, and is giving some away

We finally have a name, plus there's a quick teaser video

GoPro makes the world's best-known action cameras, but the company's momentum seems to be fading as rivals start poking into the space. Luckily, GoPro has another ambition ahead: releasing a flying drone.

Nick Woodman, the company's founder and CEO, revealed the new product plan months back, but now we have a name: GoPro Karma. The teaser video below has some fluffy narration about life and dreams and the ability to fly, but the website is less ambiguous: it's a GoPro drone, and it's coming out in 2016.

Back in May, Woodman confirmed at a Re/code conference that the company was working on a quadcopter. "It’s incredible to see our world from new perspectives," he said. "It’s a real 'Oh my god' moment. We did that with our GoPro cameras, and we see a similar opportunity in the quadcopter market. It's something that’s in our DNA, and we are excited about it across the company."

For now, that's all we know - but if the idea of a GoPro-made drone sounds appealing, you might as well sign up for updates on the website. Apparently, 100 of the Karma drones will be given away to anyone who subscribes, and a few marketing emails could be a small price to pay for your very own quadcopter.

Flying drones are hot and seem sure to get much, much more in demand, and GoPro has the name recognition and quality cameras to potentially bring them to the masses. Then again, the market already has established players, most notably DJI. In any case, we're very intrigued to see what GoPro has cooking with the Karma come next year.
