Another OnePlus phone is coming this year – and it might one-up the OnePlus 2

What do you call the potential killer of the '2016 Flagship Killer'?

It seems strange to announce a brand new phone, brazenly call it a “2016 Flagship Killer,” and then immediately reveal that another phone is coming this year that might top it. Can we call that the “2015 Momentum Killer,” then?

Granted, the promise of something even better on the not-too-far-off horizon probably won’t diminish excitement for the OnePlus 2 (pictured), given the strongly positive reaction and million-plus reservations for purchase invites, but OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei is already talking about the company’s next phone.

“There’s going to be a second phone this year, before the end of the year. Hopefully for Christmas,” Pei told USA Today, adding, “It may or may not be (higher spec’d than the OnePlus 2). When I saw the prototype for that phone I was like, ‘Holy s—, that’s going to be my daily driver.'”

Pei may not be ready to confirm any details, but if the prototype is blowing him away – and he already has the OnePlus 2 in his hands – then it would stand to reason that OnePlus is ready to one-up the OnePlus 2 in a matter of months. We’re surprised to hear official speculation about another device so quickly, and the message he’s leaving is certainly muddled.

"When the OnePlus 2 production version came out, it’s also super nice, so it’s really hard to decide now what to use," he added. "It’s going to be amazing, but today I’m not going to talk about it."

In summation: the OnePlus 2, which sounds like a fantastic phone for the price, is coming out next week (via the invite system, unfortunately). But OnePlus has another phone that may or may not be better than that, and may or may not be out in a few months. So… still planning on trying to track down a OnePlus 2 invite right away?
