Wrist wars: HTC is working on a smartwatch too

The Taiwanese tech giant looks set to join the smart wearables party

HTC is preparing to secretly show off a smartwatch to selected carriers at Mobile World Congress, bringing the fight straight to the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Gear and Pebble.

According to Bloomberg’s source, HTC has forged a smartwatch based on Qualcomm’s Toq (pictured above), which caught our eye at IFA last year thanks to its innovative colour E-Ink Mirasol display.

If true, HTC’s smartwatch will easily best the Galaxy Gear and Sony Smartwatch 2 in the battery life department, earning it major practicality brownie points.

HTC is also reportedly working on a Google Now-powered watch, along with an smart bracelet that plays music (and presumably tracks your steps).

There’s no guarantee that HTC will show off its hi-tech wristwear at Mobile World Congress, but we’ll do our best to get a sneak peak at the front lines when we land in Barcelona next week.
