Gears of War: Ultimate Edition now includes entire series for Xbox One

Granted, the other titles won't be remastered - but at least you get everything in one

Gears of War 4 won’t hit Xbox One until 2016, but Microsoft has something to tide fans over this month: Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, a remastered version of the Xbox 360 shooter classic. And there’s even more to it than expected.

Today, in advance of Gamecom kicking off in Germany this week, Microsoft and developer The Coalition announced that anyone who buys Gears of War: Ultimate Edition and plays on Xbox Live will also gain access to the entire Xbox 360 series as downloadable titles on Xbox One. That part of the equation will come when Xbox One backwards compatibility goes live later this year.

The offer runs only through the end of the year, but if you play Ultimate Edition while logged into Xbox Live before 2016 rolls around, you’ll be able to download Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, and Gears of War: Judgment. You can even grab the original Gears of War, in case you want to experience it without the remastered tweaks.

The Ultimate Edition sounds pretty promising, however. Not only have the graphics been rebuilt in many cases and enhanced to run at 60 frames per second in 1080p, but the game also includes the previously PC-exclusive additional game chapters, along with new multiplayer modes and additional maps.

And perhaps most exciting of all to series fans: early access to the Gears of War 4 online multiplayer beta, which will offer up the first true new-gen taste of the series’ beloved action. Gears of War: Ultimate Edition drops on 28 August (25 August in the States), with the rest of the entries available in their original forms on Xbox One shortly thereafter.
