Siri “wrong over one third of the time”, says study

Samuel L Jackson and Zooey Deschanel may think Siri is the mutt’s nuts, but researchers from investment firm Piper Jaffray weren’t so smitten when they tested the iPhone 4S voice assistant’s accuracy.

Siri was asked 800 questions, both on a busy Minneapolis street and inside a quiet room. It understood 83 percent of the questions asked in the street, and 89 asked in the room. Of those it understood, it answered 62 percent correctly outside and 68 percent correctly inside.

Google was tested with the same questions, understood 100 percent (well, they were keyed in after all) and responded with 86 percent correct answers.

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster reckons that Siri is two years behind Google, but expects the iOS 6 update this autumn to boost its capabilities “meaningfully”.
