Apple nearly called the iPhone the TelePod

The word "iPhone" rolls off the tongue these days, but Apple's smartphone could've wound up rocking a very different moniker.

According to former Apple advertising guru Ken Segall, Apple toyed with a number of possible names before settling on "iPhone" – including "TelePod," "Mobi," "TriPod," and, oddly, "iPad."

The reasoning behind some of the names makes more sense than others – "TriPod" refers to the iPhone's combination of phone, internet device and iPod skills, while "TelePod" sounded like a futuristic version of a telephone, while also referencing the iPod.

Apple might end up having to dust off some of those old names for the Brazilian market, what with local firm Gradiente Electronic snaffling the rights to the name. TelePod 5S, anyone?
