You should watch the first Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer

A very different kind of Star Wars saga

Last year, Lucasfilm and Disney revived the Star Wars film franchise by looking forward, with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and this year they’ll start looking back with a… well, a mid-quel, really.

Set before the events of the original Star Wars: A New Hope but after the prequel trilogy, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story finally fills in a gap by showing a story that we’ve heard but never seen: how the first Death Star plans were stolen by rebels.

And now the first trailer is out (see below). Just released this afternoon, the nearly two-minute teaser sets up the storyline, as young Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) is recruited by the rebels to take on the mission. We see the Death Star coming to life, while stormtroopers and AT-ATs battle the rebels on the ground.

However, the only seemingly recognisable character so far is Mon Mothma from Return of the Jedi. Instead, Rogue One looks to introduce a whole new crew of rebels, with actors like Diego Luna, Donnie Yen, and Forest Whitaker taking key roles. Don’t be surprised if some of them (especially Jyn Erso) end up being bigger characters in the Star Wars universe than we initially realise.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) and written by Gary Whitta and Chris Weitz, is set to his cinemas on 16 December. This is only the beginning of the hype train, mind you: we’ll surely see more tantalising footage and reveals rolled out slowly across the next eight months.
