Fire-breathing Corvette ZR1 gets the convertible treatment

First drop-top ZR1 since the 1970s

Chopping the top off a car usually means gaining a load of extra weight as the bits that are left get reinforced. Not so with the 2019 Corvette – the first ZR1 since the ‘70s with a folding roof. Chevvy reckons the all-aluminium frame is tough enough to take it, so the convertible only weighs 27kg more than the coupe. It’s got the same supercharged, 6.2-litre V8 engine under the hood, which pumps out a whopping 755bhp – or enough grunt to get you to 60mph in less than three seconds. Top speed? Over 200mph. An adjustable exhaust system means veryone will hear you coming long before they see the bright orange paint job, too. Available in your choice of seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic gearboxes, it’ll go on sale in the US next year from $123,995.
