The larger screened Kindle DX is now available to be shipped to the UK and Worldwide direct from Amazon, although be prepared to pay a pretty penny for it.

The 9.7-inch screened ereader will set you back $489 (around £310), so $230 more than the original 6-inch Kindle.

What do you get for your extra cash? Well, if you’re a big reader you’ll be able to squeeze on 3,500 books on the DX’s internal memory compared to the original Kindle’s 1,500, and it also packs an accelerometer for automatic page rotation.

Apart from that, you can expect pretty much the same on a bigger scale, including the Global Wireless for books in 60 seconds, PDF support and Text-to-Speech functionality.

Of course, as we found with the first Kindle you’re going to have to take the hit of some hefty import fees at $89.25 (£56.74), and a delivery charge of $20.98 (£13.34).

This brought the grand total of our Kindle DX to £380.98 – pretty steep.

With the movement of ereaders looking to really take off this year, it may well be worth seeing what’s around the corner in terms of colour screens and added functionality. That said, if the Kindle’s won you over – it’s available now.
