New Sonic the Hedgehog game goes back to its 2D roots

Good news for fans of blue, spiky, side-scrolling video game heroes – Sega plans to out a new Sonic the Hedgehog game that will take the title

Good news for fans of blue, spiky, side-scrolling video game heroes – Sega plans to out a new Sonic the Hedgehog game that will take the title back to its old skool 2D roots.

Previously codenamed Project Needlemouse, the new Sonic game will focus on high-definition, 2D version of the world’s most famous hedgehog.

Sega spokesman Ken Balough told gaming site Gamespot: “Many liked the daytime stages in Sonic Unleashed, but wanted to see a game that plays purely similar to the early games of the Genesis [or Mega Drive in the UK]. Project Needlemouse is that critical first step that brings Sonic back to his 2D roots.”

The release date is scheduled for next year, but there’s already a teaser video, and a Project Needlemouse website with a holding page of some recogniseable old-skool landscapes.
