Women’s international teams coming to FIFA 16

Twelve women's national teams will be introduced into the new edition

Germany, USA, France, Sweden, England, Brazil, Canada, Australia, Spain, China, Italy, and Mexico will all be playable teams in FIFA 16. So what, you might be thinking. Well, this time, for the first time, we’re talking about the women’s teams.

Women’s football’s biggest event of the calendar is happening this June, when the Women’s World Cup kicks off. So what better time to announce the new addition to everyone’s favourite football game. EA has also noted that no you won’t be able to play men’s and women’s teams against each other, so you won’t be able to see Steph Houghton taking on Raheem Sterling.

Tools and technology have been used as excuses by David Rutter, head of the FIFA series, for why they haven’t been introduced sooner. The developer apparently needed time and technology to differentiate between male and female players, as well as take the time to travel around the world scanning likenesses of different players and doing motion capture. This isn’t the first time that card has been played, since a Ubisoft developer claimed last year at E3 that using a female assassin would have doubled the amount of work needed for an Assassin’s Creed game. Although the new game is going to feature a brother/sister pair as the main characters.

The game is going to feature the likenesses of some of the biggest names in women’s football such as Canada’s captain Christine Sinclair as seen above, and the aforementioned England captain Steph Houghton.

This news has split opinions with some people asking if people will actually choose to play as the women’s teams, but to be honest we don’t see why there is any problem with there being the choice. Plus it couldn’t come at a better time for FIFA, as any news will be handy to distract people from the ongoing corruption scandal it’s currently surrounded by.

In future David Rutter has said that there could be the addition of club sides such as Arsenal and Manchester City, but for now I think we should just be happy that this is a good step forward for the game series.

FIFA 16 is released on September 22nd, and the Women’s World Cup starts on June 6th.
