Japan to start world's first 4K TV broadcasts in 2014
We were blown away by Sony and Panaonic's 4K OLED TVs at CES 2013 – and according to BBC North controller Mark Harrison, 4K is set to be more important than 3D. The only problem is, there's nothing to watch on them.
That may be about to change, though – the Japanese government is planning to start the world's first 4K TV broadcasts in July 2014, according to the Asahi Shimbun.
That's ahead of its previously planned schedule, which targeted 2016 for 4K broadcasts – but with Sony managing to compress 4K footage into a broadcast-friendly 50Mbps stream, it looks like 4K could be arriving ahead of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Better start saving up, then – 4K tellies are pricey, after all.
