iPhone 5 rumoured to wear metal

- iPhone 5 rumour round-up

If you’ve been overindulging on all of the iPad 2 news, perhaps a wafer thin iPhone 5 rumour will help ease the bloated feeling.

Whispers from a source in China are pointing towards a re-embracing of aluminum and the ditching of glass for the next version of the phone that changed everything. Various reasons for this change point to problems such as the glass scratching easily, its weight and its allergy to being painted white.

Unsurprisingly the dodgy antenna appears to be undergoing a nip and tuck, with the antenna rumoured to be housed in the rear Apple logo, iPad style. The new Apple A5 processor is also expected to be powering the device, which is likely to be unveiled this summer and as always, expect the Apple hype-o-meter to be maxed out until then.

The new redesign looks like a good idea for both iPhone & iPod Touch as aliminium unibody doesn't scratch easily and would offer a strong structure.

I would recommend that Apple adds a 8MP sensor with a dual LED setup so that there is a LED to the left & right of the senor for improved performance in low light conditions.

Getting rid of the 8GB model and introducing a 64GB model would also be a good idea (especially with all these HD Films that are going to be stored on these iPhones).

The 'new' design is more of a degenerative step for Apple as it looks based strongly on the iPhone 3G and 3Gs. The aluminium construction process would require a increase in cost to cover first-gen marketing of the new manufacturing process, especially after investing in the iPhone 4's.

Dynamic Webb's point about "Getting rid of the 8GB model and introducing a 64GB model would also be a good idea" ,I think, many people would disagree with. The reasons for this are plentiful, I will use two examples:

Firstly, the low-end media consumer who might wish to store a few thousand songs, a movie for travel and his photo's would take some room but remain to have some for app's and have some spare space.

Secondly, the price of the phone is a major factor for consumers, especially apple consumers, where a jump from the iPhone 4's 16GB model to it's 32GB model is an extra £112 (17% increase) in which this might consequently push it out of people's price range, joint with the market that might not require such a size of memory.

Another note is that a 8 MP camera would increase the cost, weight and size of the phone as the depth of the lens (for quality purposes) would be the reason for this.

All of these point's could result in a increased price, weight, thickness and a lower consumer rate.

Going back to Eden Networks comment about the styling being degenerative... Is that a bad thing? the 3GS feels better in your hand and weight correctly. The design above takes the front of an iphone 4 and the back of the 3GS.. best of both world me thinks. As for spec of camera, i wouldn't have thought Apple would have a choice, its either upgrade or get left behind, and with such an immense screen, it wouldn't make sense not to increase it. But either way.. all i hope is that its ready for summer. I haven't upgraded in hope thats the case. I hope i'm not counting my chickens
