Sparse wallets rejoice, the plastic budget iPhone 5S cometh

News of an iPhone, half the price of the current model, has been rife online. Now reports suggest the iPhone 5S will be a plastic smartphone.
According to Jefferies & Company analyst Peter Misek the plastic iPhone 5S will launch in June or July this year. This isn’t far off other budget iPhone rumours that claim August as the launch day. And with renders of plastic iPhones online already we’d wager it’s only a matter of time.
Expect to pay around £220 for the handset. Whether that price gets you a Retina Display in this rumoured 4in device is still up for debate. But with the iPad Mini forgoing quality for price it doesn't seem unimaginable – even if Steve Jobs wouldn't have approved.

So after suing Samsung claiming they ripped the iPhone off in general, now they make their phones bigger, introduce notification bars, make their tablets smaller, now their phones plastic...sounds like Apple are desperately trying to ape Samsung to be honest.
I can't see this selling that much. It's still rubbish value even at £220 when the Nexus 4 is £240. For that £220 you'll probably get 8gb, very low screen resolution (Apple still seem to think that 'retina' screens are something worth shouting about and think they only need to put them on the premium lines despite everybody else having much higher resolutions than Apple) and a very limited and old fashioned OS paired with a limited and old fashioned dual core processor (and probably only 512mb of RAM so Apple can render your phone useless in 12 months when iOS7 comes out).
But let's face it, it'll be more like £350. If it was £220, it would highlight what dreadful value the normal iPhone is (twice the price for an old model? Who's going to buy that?) and make people realise that they really are paying £300 for that metal shell. Also, it'll make all the iPod touch models completely useless.
If Apple went about this properly and released a phone with good screen resolution, no deliberately strangled or throttled specs just to make sure there's still a point in the iPhone 5 and a good price point, they could get back in the game. But only if they try to really give the customer what they are looking for instead of trying to sell them a really poor value product with the help of the standard Apple smoke and mirrors. Because people have seen through that and unless Apple really give people what they want, they won't buy Apple anymore. It's already happening/happened.
