Amazon Fire TV to get video game streaming service

It’s like Spotify or Netflix, but for video games rather than music or movies – and it’s coming to the Amazon Fire TV soon.

We’re talking about a new streaming service from GameFly, a US company hitherto known for sending out physical game rentals in much the same way Netflix once sent out physical DVDs. And now, like Netflix, it’s moving into a streaming model, starting on the Fire TV.

The streaming service will be available in exchange for a monthly fee, with six packages available. Five of these are priced at US$6.99 a month and each features seven games, while the “Gamer Pack” is US$9.99 but offers access to 16 titles.

Games available include Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, Sleeping Dogs, Darksiders II, GRID 2 and Red Faction: Guerilla. In other words, we’re not talking about the latest, greatest titles here – but let’s also not forget that you’ll be playing them on a glorified set-top box running on a mobile phone processor. All titles have been optimised to work with Amazon’s optional game controller, which costs an extra £34.99 on top of the Fire TV’s £79 price tag.

There’s no word as yet as to whether GameFly’s service will be available outside of the US, or if it will roll out to platforms other than the Fire TV. We’ll keep you posted of any developments.
