Hi-fi's not dead! (insists Denon)

Prepare yourself for a shock: in some corners of this country, people still buy stereo hi-fis.

So, all 11 of you, feast your eyes on this new Denon CD player and amp combo, gunning straight for the budget territory currently owned by Cambridge Audio.

Naturally, they deploy 24 bit DACs - that's good sound quality to non-audiophiles - and come in both silver and black to match your rack's hue. The CD player part of the equation, the DCD-700AE, even makes a nod to modernity by including support for burned CD-Rs and MP3/WMA playback.

The manly amp, meanwhile, comes with a fairly standard set of four inputs and is capable of pumping out 100W through each speaker.

Aesthetically, the duo certainly hold their own against Cambridge and Marantz; whether they'll make our ears tingle with joy remains to be tested.
