Wait, didn’t Lego already release a Sandcrawler set?
Yes, they originally launched a model of the Sandcrawler back in 2005, but it wasn’t exactly stunning. Apparently, Lego’s designers always saw it as a bit of a missed opportunity, so now almost ten years on they’ve revisited the Jawas’ desert-crossing droid-nabber with a new limited edition set in the company’s Ultimate Collector’s Series.

What’s the difference?

The new set is far larger and more complex than the old one. There are almost 3,300 bricks involved, as well as eight tank tracks (the rear four of which can be steered), a front ramp that can be lowered using a gear and two chains, a crane and a magnet that can pick up droids and deposit them inside. The interior is highly detailed, and includes a cockpit from which the Jawa pilots steer the behemoth.

And it’s big?
Oh yes. Once completed, it measures 18 inches in length, 9 inches in height and 6 inches in width. It’s a pretty imposing beast, we think you’ll agree.

Looks like some new Mini-Figures too?
Yep, there’s a brand new Uncle Owen figure and a bunch of new droids (including R1 and R2 units), plus C-3PO, R2-D2, a young Luke Skywalker and four Jawas. And there’s a speeder bike as well.

Sounds like a pretty bumper crop of stuff. So what’s the damage?
I hope you’re sitting down for this. The set (which is numbered 75059 in Lego’s catalogue) is going to cost £250 in the UK, or US$350/€300 in other parts of the world. Suffice to say, this is one piece of Lego that ain’t no kid’s toy – much like the recently-announced Simpsons house set (a mere snip at £180).
