Fully Charged: Nokia announcement today, Tony Hawk rides the Hendo hoverboard, and Halo: The Master Chief Collection patch still days away

Wake up, wipe the sleep from your eyes, and fill your brain with our morning news roundup

Nokia announcing something today

We hate to be so vague, but that’s the hand Nokia is playing in anticipation of some sort of announcement today. The Finnish company teased the above image on Twitter in advance of its “What’s next, Nokia?” panel at the Slush conference in its native country this morning, along with the text, “Guess what? We’re up to something.”

And we’re talking about the original Nokia here – the company that continued on after Microsoft acquired its smartphone hardware business and still used the brand name until recently. Now that the public association is officially ending, Nokia seems primed to reestablish itself with some sort of consumer product.

At a glance, it looks like something in the vein of a set top box or home theater PC. Or maybe it’s just a fancy box to hold something pocket-sized, like another Android handset to follow the Nokia X models. Truly, if Nokia really wants to push towards a new future, it won’t be another familiar-looking smartphone or other consumer device that follows existing trends. Here’s hoping it really is something to give the Nokia name fresh life in the post-Microsoft era.

Tony Hawk on a real hoverboard

Skateboarding legend Tony Hawk may be advancing in years, but it hasn’t stopped him from riding, promoting his sport, and seemingly having a lot of fun with it. And his celebrity comes with some really cool perks – like being one of the first to ride Hendo’s working prototype hoverboard.

The Hendo hoverboard is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter (it’s already surged well past the goal), and we can’t imagine a much better marketing tool than this. Hawk does his best at first to simply stay on the board, which uses electromagnets to stay airborne, and then is able to do some basic trickery at the end. It’s really quite neat, and whether or not you’re personally enthused by such tech, it’s worth a look.

Halo matchmaking fix delayed

Halo: The Master Chief Collection

Last week’s launch of Halo: The Master Chief Collection for Xbox One delivered a compilation of more than 100 beloved maps from across the first-person shooter franchise – and sadly, due to matchmaking bugs, few ways to actually play them. Many players have been unable to actually connect to others in the week since due to bugs in the matchmaking code.

A patch was promised to launch tomorrow, 19 November, but now it sounds like the update will debut late this week instead. Developer 343 Industries blames testing and certification for the extra time, which will provide little solace to those who excitedly purchased the game last week, but at least the later launch will allow for more bug fixes to be bundled in.
