Canon’s G1X Mark III is a charming crossbreed of DSLR and compact

Bichon Frise dimensions, whippet eyesight...

What do you get when you cross a Canon 80D with a pocket travel camera? Okay, it’s not a classic punchline, but the Canon G1X Mark III (£1149, due November, canon.com)  is the promising-if-unhilarious answer. Packing the same 24MP APS-C sensor as its DSLR cousin, it adds an f/2.8-5.6 lens with 3x optical zoom and an electronic viewfinder, making it a highly tempting travel camera. It might even be up for a trip to the Scottish highlands, thanks to weathersealing that Canon claims makes it impervious to dust and moisture. And with a body that’s only 51mm thick and weighs in at 398g, you’ll be able to slip it into your coat pocket if the rain goes sideways anyway.

About

Mark's first review for Stuff was the Nokia N-Gage in 2004. Luckily, his career lasted a little longer than the taco phone, and he's been trying to figure out how gadgets fit back into their boxes ever since. While his 'Extreme Mark Wilson' persona was retired following a Microsoft skydiving incident, this means he can often be spotted in the wilds of South West London testing action cams, drones and smartwatches, and occasionally cursing at them.
