Destruction rules in Dangerous Golf, made by former Burnout creators

It's like Crash mode in Burnout, only with flaming balls and smashed-up toilets

Last October, a new developer – Three Fields Entertainment – comprised of former leads from the Burnout racing series announced they’d be making a spiritual successor to that Criterion Games classic. But they’re trying something very different first.

Today, the team revealed Dangerous Golf, a game that owes as much to the sport in question as it does to the Crash mode from Burnout. In essence, it’s a golf game in which destruction seems just as important as actually sinking the ball in the hole: you’re given various real-world playgrounds full of things to smash up, and are awarded for making the biggest mess you can while playing.

Amongst the indoor and outdoor locales are a mansion full of fine china, a public loo, a hotel kitchen, and even a gas station that can be combusted with your flaming ball. Three Fields says you’ll try to cause as much damage as possible before executing an amazing trick shot to finally sink the ball in the hole. And there will be more than 100 total holes available throughout the game.

It’s obviously an arcade-style experience built towards fun rather than anything close to simulation, and the team says it pulled inspiration not only from Burnout and Criterion’s wild shooter Black, but also amped-up sports classic NBA Jam. And Dangerous Golf should look plenty spectacular, too, thanks to the power of Unreal Engine 4.

Dangerous Golf will be a digital release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, and it’s not far off: the game is due out in May. It may be a while still before we see the Burnout successor they’ve also been teasing the last few months, but this is a very promising first project that shows the kind of brash fun we should expect from Three Fields.
