Netflix bags UK streaming rights to MGM films

Netflix has teamed up with movie studio MGM to snaffle the first-run streaming rights for its films in the UK. That means that when Netflix rolls out its service in the UK and Ireland early next year, it'll have the exclusive rights to stream MGM titles during the pay-TV window, when Sky Movies shows new release films.

The multi-year deal covers most of MGM's films, including big hitters such as The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again. Other new films covered by the deal include Zookeeper, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters and 21 Jump Street.

The deal also means that Netflix will get access to MGM's catalogue of movies including The Usual Suspects, Fargo and Capote.

There's no word as yet on whether the deal covers the new James Bond film Skyfall – which is co-produced by MGM and Sony. But as soon as we find out, we'll let you know.
