Nintendo Wii U shows its game face

What do you do when you’ve changed the face of gaming as often as Nintendo has? Do it again, of course. At the world’s hottest gaming show, E3, Ninty’s just ripped the wraps off the Wii U – the HD console it claims is the future of home gaming.

The console itself resembles nothing so much as a well-fed Wii: white and bloated. But the controller has a 6.2-inch touchscreen, motion control and a plethora of buttonry for thumb junkies. There’s also a front-facing camera and when your sister wants to watch The Only Way Is Essex, you can bring your gameplay onto the controller's screen, freeing up the TV for her fix of post-reality broadcasting.
Talking of games, Nintendo’s announced some unusually heavyweight partners for the Wii U. Expect the likes of DiRT, Ghost Recon, Tekken, Ninja Gaiden and Assassin’s Creed to be lining up alongside it for launch. And the launch date? Bad news for the impatient – the Wii U won’t be out until 2012. Deep breaths, now.

Comment seems harsh. Microsoft/Sony aren't really known for their innovation; look at where their consoles are at now, using motion control, instigated by the Wii. The third party games announced are a good sign, and the hardware looks solid, if a little unusual. I think this could build up a nice lead before the PS4 or Xbox 720 or whatever.

well after seeing the technical demo. and more videos. it still looks like a over inflated wii, this time with a stupid name. oh and ipad clone for a controller. well looks ok. the thought of it 10 out of 10. i just was expected to be blown away.
maybe this is a fill in before the real wii HD comes out.

Epic, 10/10 for me, its good that Nintendo are taking the fight to Microsoft and Sony
Looks plasticky but thats not always a bad thing, now they need to release in the colours not just white and black, back to the days of the Nintendo 64
Cannot wait!!

Remember, they laughed at the Wii, too. Later, Microsoft and Sony were forced to spend millions developing their own motion control systems to keep up...

I'm not convinced this will be the only controller for it anyway. It's probably the 'hardcore' controller but can you imagine playing some of the Wii style games with this thing? Used to be a risk of throwing a remote through your tv screen; this would be like chucking a breeze block at it.

if this is nintendo's idea of hardcore games console. well we will see mario kart in 1080p. or zelda in 1080p.
not quite hardcore me thinks. i think that the xbox will still be top selling console next xmas.
i just wish they would come up with something awesome. yes this is inovative but so was wii. but this is not jaw dropping. like seeing the xbox 360 or ps3 for the first time.
shame i had high hopes for this. even considering upgrading to this next year.
will wait for xbox 720 to see something amazing.

What are you talking about? 'Not quite hardcore?' Do I have to draw your attention to the statement 'Expect the likes of DiRT, Ghost Recon, Tekken, Ninja Gaiden and Assassin’s Creed to be lining up alongside it for launch'?
Also, the controller's only similarities to an iPad are: It has a touchscreen. It has motion sensors. It has a camera. That's it. It has far more buttons and, mostly IT'S A CONTROLLER.

How about HD, PS3-beating graphics? That convince anyone?
